Anyone want to give book recommendations? (1 Viewer)

But I’m looking for a pretty specific type of book. I want it to be interesting to an adult, but at the same time I would want it to be quite a bit shorter than the average adult book. An example I thought of is the Hobbit, though that may be pretty long even for what I want. I’m thinking about this because I’m considering reading a Russian translation, and I’m not a fast reader in Russian yet by any means. But you also don’t have to know if it exists in Russian, I can do that myself

Tuesdays with Morrie is a really good book. It isn't too long; a little over 200 pages. But it isn't as exciting as something like The Hobbit, but still a really good read.

Sci fi, fantasy, and historical fiction are my top ones, but I’m open to other genres as well. For nonfiction biographies can be pretty cool too.

It does sound pretty interesting. Different for me, but interesting Ill put it on my list of possibilities

My biased self wants to recommend my current obsession But because I think I remember you telling me about a book you read about true events I shall still recommend Society of The Snow by Pablo Vierci. It details the survival of those in the plane crash in the Andes in 1972 and to me is really moving and just an amazing story of survival and brotherhood. There’s a really amazing movie with the same name that was released last year, I highly recommend that as well because, as I previously stated I am fascinated by the story.
But Four Treasures of The Sky by Jenny Tinghui Zhang is really great. It’s Historical Fiction

For short sci-fi, hard to go wrong with The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells; the first book is All Systems Red. If you want more of a comedic bent, then John Scalzi's Kaiju Preservation Society and Starter Villain are both good fun; Starter Villain especially has strong "eat the rich" themes.

For short fantasy, Even Though I Knew the End by CL Polk was very popular with my bookclub. It's basically noir detective style focused on demons. Thornhedge by T Kingfisher was a bit lighter, as it's a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. T Kingfisher is a solid recommendation in general, if you like slightly dark fantasy but not TOO dark. If you want something bloodier for the season, then The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw will have that in spades.

I don't read much historical, but maybe The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden might be up your alley. It's sort of magical realism-esque set in Russia.

I don't read much YA anymore, so these might not shoot as young as you might want. But hopefully something piques your interest!

ted chiang and ken liu are excellent sci fi short story writers, would rec lifecycle of software objects and the man who ended history: a documentary respectively, the latter being slightly longer (really, really rec more of their works though)
mono no aware is one of my favourite short stories of all time too
autobiography of red by anne carson is amazing, anne carson’s big in the classics world and is also known for her translations of sappho’s works
a.v. marracini's essays I love reading so her book is something I want to buy myself, same with sanmao’s stories of the sahara
doppelgänger by naomi klein also has an approach I find interesting

It really is intriguing, the author did multiple interviews with the survivors and it’s incredible to see all their povs on things and just realizing how strong humans can be, lots of facts left me shocked. I never heard of their story before and ever since I watched the movie I have watched way too many interviews and read too many books/articles about them now. The book was also really nice to hear from the more quieter survivors because some had never even talked about the event until this book so it was great to get to know all of them and more of what each person went through.

I can rec some romance. There's an author named Morgenthaler (I forget her first name) who has a series called Moose Springs. It's based in the fictitious Mosse Springs, Alaska, and there are three books therein: The Tourist Attraction, Mistletoe & Mr. Right, and Enjoy the View. She's a very good writer! They're pretty long reads, but I still rec them.
