I don’t think there’s a genre I’d refuse to read, but ofc some genres end up as flops more often than others generally. But I think gems exist everywhere and in all genres

y/n-esque youth novels with the blandest female protags, they always hv such an interesting plot and a cool cover and i open the book... to find the human equivalent of an ikea store (soulless, lifeless, thinks it's stylish) staring back @ me...
also when its in first person but the narrator has nothing to add to the conversation, it really grinds my ganache like. percy jackson for example? he adds the witty sarcastic comments and does the comedic relief himself. but like, there was this other book i read? main character added nothing. just described what was happening. & it was SUCH A GOOD plot too, about time travel and being stuck in between times and dystopia, but the main character, any time she had a thought that was special or unique, she would say it out loud. like. it could be in 3rd person and nothing would change

The last nonfiction I read (about cat evolution) did it and I liked it Made it less just facts recited to you and more engaging imo

Horror (I don't like being scared, the real world is scary enough as is), non-fiction about subjects I am not interested in (non-fiction about actually interesting stuff is fine), most fantasy books (just not my cup of tea for some reason) and history books (most history is either really boring, or really disturbing and messed up).

non-fiction, books are a form of escapism for me and fiction is the most enjoyable
non-fiction can be decent reads but the motive for and point of why I read is missing from them

I prefer non-fiction to fiction in history and crime. Often it's fascinating to research further, watching YouTube documentaries on the subject, visiting the places mentioned in the books via Google Earth/Street View. So I almost never read fiction books.

I kind of agree. I like it when it's more subtle and you have to put the pieces kind of together and conclude that it takes place in this period or is inspired by it. Not when the whole story is built around it being historical fiction.

That's interesting! I prefer to read memoirs more than general non-fiction. However, those science books are really interesting and contain a lot of stuff I didn't know.

I really recommend reading memoirs. I was able to escape into the lens of someone else's life for a little while.

Though the author's credibility on this book is still a subject of controversy, "In Order to Live" by Yeonmi Park is a really good read. Even if some of it is a stretch, you'll find out things about North Korea that you won't find out if you Google it. And actually, watching a perspective through the eyes of someone who's lived there and escaped from there is truly an interesting read. It's built on a lot of hope but also really hurts because she goes through a lot of tough times. Escaping from North Korea was anything but easy. Quite literally the opposite of easy. But the fact that her and her mom made it out together was a miracle of its own.

And the best part is that the basis of it is real. And fair warning, the credibility of this memoir is very controversial and there are some moments that many readers agree are too perfect or miraculous to have happened in real life. But the fact was that she was a North Korean defector, and she is out of the country with her mom and sister, no matter how she got out. It took a lot of bravery to write something like this to the point where the North Korean government has called her a liar and traitor to her home country.

We were doing some memoir viewings because we had to read and make a project about our memoir in English III (and we got to choose from a wide variety of them) and I chose this book mostly because it caught my eye as a South Korean pop culture fan. I realized I didn't know much about North Korea and often wondered how it would be to try to escape from there and this was definitely the book for that.

I also read another memoir by the mother of the Clintons (one of them was an American president). It was nothing super special other than her literally being the birth mother of Bill Clinton but one thing that really caught my eye was how she was writing her life story while she had cancer which is something really sad. And the even sadder thing was that she didn't live too much longer after that. It always feels surreal to hear about the story of someone who has already passed, even if they haven't at the time of it being released or writing it. You never know whether you're going to live much longer and that's one of the scariest parts about life.

I just came across this book because I was searching for one to complete my school's library bingo challenge. Which I did and this was one of the last books I read for that.
