As in, is there an actor (or similar) who you'll go see a film in theaters primarily because of them?

Not an actor, but I saw The Boy and the Heron because it's Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli. I knew nothing else about the film, other than it is supposed to be Miyazaki's last film.

I would absolute watch anything from Miyazaki (more so than ghibli since he's films even transcend ghibli stuff)

Definitely!! I know a movie is much bigger than just one person, but the Ghibli films without his involvement can't seem to quite reach his highs.

A theater near me is doing a "Ghibli month" next month, and I can't decide which movie to see on the big screen! They have Howl's, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Totoro all planned out!

no Laputa - Castle in the Sky ??? hmmm...

(that is my fav ghibli film) I think I've seen 75% of all the ghibli stuff and all those you've mentioned

Only one a week, sadly! Maybe it'll do super well and they'll do another Ghibli month later.

My personal faves are Kiki's and From Up on Poppy Hill, but there's really nothing that someone could mention as their face Miyazaki film that I'd find questionable.

that's cool since I think those you mentioned are maybe some of the more popular ones...
Miyazaki (himself) I think has never made a bad film

'Suzume no tojimari'(or just 'Suzume')


I almost or forgot i watched either '5 centimeters per Second' or 'Voices from Distant Stars' or 'The Place Promised in our early years' over 10 yrs ago it seems like, but i dint/wasnt in the right frame of mind then.

I did like Miyazaki films up to Spirited Away, starting from Princess Mononoke and going bkwards thru most of his ghibli movies(or all bk to Nausicaa, inclyding reading the black n white translated manga). But later on i lost the interest ard Ponyo, the wind rises n i hvnt felt the interest to watch boy n the heron yet.

Shinkai seems to be more contemporary n lokking at the present, future while not forgetting the past whereas miyazaki , to me, focuses more on looking backwards while not seeing the present or overlooking it n the future.

Tat was cool in porco rosse, nausicaa n the young witch movie but i hvnt as much interest since howl's moving castle.plus i nvr had the feels as much for miyazaki except maybe during mononoke for San n ashitaka, asych as i did for taki n mitsuha during Your Name, or (i had to google the characyers' names since i only watched the movie once) hina n hodaka, or suzume in Suzume no tojimari. I only felt glimmers of emotion during nausicaa i think. Different for folks ig.

His work is so beautiful! I can definitely see the appeal in following him. I hope he's able to get more opportunities to reach international audiences after how well Suzume has been received.

I think they're just different generations, maybe.

Suzume seems critically acclaimed, however i dont see it being as popular or as well known as Your Name(internationally) either by the audience or the media. I think Your Name was a juggernaut internationally(n in Japan). Suzume (to me anyways), seems more renowned in Japan(tho im unsure if as much as Your Name) n amongst anime/Makoto Shinkai fans internationally. I dont rlly see a surge in popularity/renown internationally for Suzume, even at a similar or lower level than Your Name.

Sadly, i think Your Name was, internationally at least so far, his peak. Mostly i think Weathering with Ypu and Suzume were more subtle/titled opaquely for non-Japanese/asian viewers(at least i think so, since asian titles do seem less in yr face here, idk i like watching a mix of shows but more English language ones and a proportion of non-english ones tat catch my attention<thru word of mouth-ie reviews n such, n awards>.
