I have never been good at chess. I do like the game; but lack of practice and being a lousy loser prevents me from engaging people online.

I played against my then ten-year old nephew when he started learning how to play. Im not great but i could play him n win, the first few times. It wasnt how good inam but i gave him a few good matches.

But my nephew got so good so fast tat my skill lvl posed no challenge to him pretty quick n he stopped playing against me. He went on to play inter-school (high school level) or nation wide tournaments for school kids n won a few matches. My skill level isnt great or anything but i play a few moves ahead and am serious even against ten year olds (at least my nephew when he was tat age). I hvnt played since then, most players are too good for me n if evenly matched, i hvnt found any who play seriously, but i hvnt srsly tried. My younger brother studies from books n played in high school like his son.

Im abt slightly better than a learner who isnt a natural player like my ten yr old nephew. I could play against maybe 6 months learning players n give a good game but tats abt it. I couldnt compete against srs players or naturally talented players who are serious. I watched n enjoyed the tv show Queen's Gambit, about a young female chess player in the 50s/60s-Beth Harmon. It was quite illuminating tho entirely or mostly fictional. Can u tell i like chess more than i can play it well? Not as much as my younger brother or my nephew but still i like chess.

haha I prefer playing to watching to be honest, I just infd it a fun way to pass time. I've never seen queen's gambit, would you reccomment?

Its kinda retro in the setting but also modernistic playing with viewer expectation about how things might turn out for the main character. Its interesting, maybe try out the trailer n if ur intrigued watch the first bits of the first episode? I was fortunate in a way cos the series is quite short n all episodes were out when i decided to watch it ard ?March? or ard then this yr. I dint manage to watch it all in one day but it was compelling enuf tat i watched it probably over/within 1 week or so. Non chess enthusiasts may hv liked it too, enuf for it to be quite popular. I read reviews/overviews/news abt it just b4 i watched it, maybe it was Emmy awards nominations/wins tat was why it was in the news then.

Spoilers abound for why i liked it/compelled me to keep watching till the end. If u dont mind spoilers ill include the reasons in my next comment here.

Spoiler: Why i like Queen's Gambit tv show, incomplete

Beth Harmon is a gifted orphan who plays chess after she is sent to an orphanage. She later is adopted n continues to play chess, n wins/competes in local/state/then national chess tournaments. She yearns to be world champiom/beat the current/reigning Chess world champion in Russia (there's a bit of undercurrent of male/female dynamics in the chess world, but i think the real world of chess is much more segregated).

Iv forgotten most of the middle n maybe parts of the ending but i rmbr being satisfactory ending overall, tho i cant rmbr if the ending reflects the real world of chess in the era it is set. Its adapted from a 1980s book by an author then probably more famous for movies adapted from his books, Hustler, Man Who fell to Earth, n Color of Money. I hvnt watched the other films except Color of Money which changed the story from the book, none of which iv read this far.
