I come from the land down under and but for the sheep loving new zealanders over east there aren't many countries who are ahead of us timezone wise and thus we celebrate "pi day" before other EU/US people

Oh, that makes sense. But do you celebrate pi day? It’s made because of the fact that the date lines up the way it does for the US, but you guys have a different date system. I read only the US and Belize have it as a holiday (ig officially?) but idk whether it’s unofficially celebrated other places

it's an unofficial celebration if you will
it's not like we go around eating pies and talking in 3.14s etc etc lol
we know it happens and make a few jokes about it and that's it

Yeah makes sense. I was like if Australia had it as an official holiday before the US that would be kind of weird Though ngl a lot of people don’t really know about the holiday in the US even, nothing like a typical holiday ofc (Halloween, Easter, ect).

Very doubtful unless your boss is a major major major math geek and even then probably not. But when I was a student I did get pies on pi day when I was on the older side.

like there's things like teacher appreciation day and harmony day and children's day and international [insert condition] awareness day etc etc which are all fine and dandy but aren't official public holidays

In 2009 it was named a national holiday (like went through the House of Representatives and all that jazz). It’s not a federal holiday though. I think those two are different. I know national holidays don’t require non federal institutions to have the day off, I can’t imagine pi day is big enough for federal employees to have the date off, I’m not completely sure about that side of things.

like to me the purpose of a national holiday for us plebs to have a day off aka christmas/easter/you guys have MLK day and we have queen's (king's???) birthday
if it's not a day off then how is it any different from any one of the multitude of awareness days??? (at least that's what it seems like to me)

It might not be any different than an awareness day tbh. Federal holidays are usually a day off (federal jobs it’s required, private employees are given a choice). I just know the House of Representatives did vote to make it a “national holiday”, whatever that means.

Yeah. I think practically all employers give the day off. Maybe some exist that don’t but that would probably be very very rare, at least for the biggest ones.
