Many of you have heard about the dark side and the light side of the force and their most recognizable users, sith and Jedi but not all force users belong to an organization, actually there are other users that don't fall into any of those categories: The Grey Jedi.
The term Grey Jedi is not a new at all, it was used back in the Old Republic days (Legends) as a way to name all those force users who dominated dark and light side techniques and also the Jedi that for some reason did not follow the Jedi Counsil's rules (disobeying some parts of the Jedi code) or that left the order completely.
On that matter, it's important to notice that the so called Grey Jedi never aligned themselves with the Sith or with any other dark forces. They could use dark side abilities (like force lightning) without falling into the dark side. Also, they usually were allies of Jedi in times of conflict, despite not following directions from the Jedi counsil. That's the reason why they are still recognized as Jedi eventhough, they officially don't belong to the order.
In canon, we don't see any declared example of Grey Jedi because the concept has never been introduced officially. Although, there have been hints to it in the new trilogy and also in The clone Wars series. Some examples are: Ahsoka Tano, Rey and even Qui Gon Jiin.
The last one was considered Grey due to his constant criticism and disobedience towards the Jedi Counsil.
In Legends (Expanded Universe) there are more examples of Grey Jedi but probably the most interesting is Luke Skywalker. In this point, I would like to say this is only my theory and nothing in canon or not cannot defines Luke as Grey Jedi and actually, he doesn't define himself like such (as far as I know) but his words in TLJ move towards that direction and in Legends, Luke abandoned some of most common the Jedi practices while forming his New Jedi Order.
