Basque people are now safe in Iceland (1 Viewer)

In 1615, a group of 80 Basque whalers were stranded in the Westfjords district in Iceland. They had no food or supplies, and there were reports of them robbing locals and farmers. The sheriff of the region drew up a law allowing Basque people to be killed, and 30 were killed following that order. In 2015, the law was repealed in a ceremony.

Obviously the repeal was ceremonial, and it wasn’t actually legal to murder anyone by that point, Basque or not. But it is a bit funny
