Being multilingual should be a requirement for teachers (1 Viewer)

I think this would make teaching multilingual students easier if all qualified teachers they accept into the schools were already multilingual so it wouldn't require entirely separate staff thereby reasonably and easily tossing less money. Every school I've been to has had a large population of multilingual students whether it's Chinese, Spanish, or Creole. Even if it's not the majority, having more or even a full body of school staff that are multilingual creates an environment where these students can be better taught in all subjects and less othered. If all teachers were multilingual speaking two or more languages as opposed to just one algebra instructor speaking some Hindi dialect I think it would greatly improve the efficiency of schools as a whole. This can, however, potentially block out those who are qualified fully but don't speak a foreign language, but I think that would be okay. Making requirements stricter over time will make the people working in school establishments more rigorous and diligent

Teachers already aren't paid nearly enough. The focus should probably be on improving wages and preventing burnout first :(

Well, in a perfect world we teachers would also earn a better pay and have adequate work conditions to prevent a burnout

The only teachers that should be required to be multilingual are foreign language teachers.

Teachers don't get paid nearly enough for this. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn one language, let alone multiple languages. Having more strict requirements for teachers isn't going to help anybody

I speak my ethnic language other than English, but I don't think it's necessary for all teachers to be multilingual
that's just an unrealistic expectation on top of many other unrealistic expectations put on us teachers x.x
it's bad enough that sometimes we have to do the job of parenting and managing behaviours too, let alone learning a whole new language

Teaching is already a dying job with how undesirable of a job it is and if you put even more walls around it then you'll have absolutely no one interested in doing it which we should be making teaching a more desirable job not a less desirable one.

It’s a great benefit if a teacher knows multiple languages. However I don’t think it should be a requirement. Teachers are given limited resources, and aren’t paid nearly enough. This is a structural issue, not a teacher issue. There should be programs within schools to help international students, in their preferred language, but it should not fall only on the burden of teachers. I’m from Canada and we have both English and French teachers. I did a placement where there were two students who spoke neither language and they had a bilingual student tutor come in, and that was really beneficial too.

A bit off off-track but this state I live in is broke as fuck If my mom knew, we wouldn't have moved here but for safety, we had to move. They are shutting down MANY schools and cutting off many staff. The funds are getting cut and there used to be many language classes but those are shutting down... So I personally don't think the teachers would do that but maybe that's just the state I'm in ???
