It’s a common misconception, but it stems from the fact that Franklin opposed the proposed seal of the US, which had a (funny looking) bald eagle. He thought it looked like a turkey and said that the turkey also had a better moral character. He did actually propose a seal himself years earlier, which depicted Moses crossing the Red Sea. Because, you know, Murica.
