&c used to mean ect (2 Viewers)

& is a combination of e and T in Latin. Et meant (and still means) and. So &c means “and cetera”, or “and the rest”

Yeah the place I saw it was in a US Civil war era recipe, so 1860s. Even at that point it wasnt commonly used. This is probably attributable to the fact that & used to be considered the 27th letter in the English alphabet, but around the 1860s it was more commonly not taught as a letter anymore. So that probably contributed to &c no longer really being used also.

Yeah it was definitely a bit of an odd one, and not used for that long. Though it is worth saying that it was much more commonplace than now, even before it became a letter

The "&" always looked weird too me and I never knew or I guess thought about where it came from.
