Translating documents, writing full on letters, reading directions, doctor’s appointments. It was endless and as a kid I just did it and sometimes got frustrated. As I got older I finally started to understand just how hard my parents generation had it. They left their countries young and had to pretty much start over. It wasn’t uncommon to hear about how parents were rich in their home country and then were poor when they moved countries.
They didn’t know the language and got mocked for their accents and still did when I was a kid. Sometimes I wish I could go back and kick some people in the balls or rip their nipples out :)
Now the struggle is figuring out technology and remembering their Facebook password no worries tho…I have all their passwords.

as the oldest son of immigrant parents I 100% agree with you

life is hard for migrants not to mention the fact that some certain 1st world countries don't recognise the academnic merits of 2nd or 3rd world countries like one of my friend's mothers was a 100% recognised nurse in her own country but Australia wouldn't recognise it

It is a difficult thing. It definitely can seem innocent at first but too many things in life are dark and you can’t avoid them forever. In a medical setting in the US there is at least the requirement that if you require a translator the hospital/doctors office has to provide one, but there’s still other situations where this can occur and be to the detriment of the child.

Can’t even imagine how it must have been like to break life altering news to parents. :( I’m not sure if there are readily available translators everywhere now but it wasn’t like that when I was a kid. Luckily all I had to explain were vaccine cards, health insurance, basic stuff. And telling my parents needles at the dentist contained poison for kids and to take me home immediately >.> they didn’t believe me for the second part.

I think it’s a law now that if you need a translator at a medical facility they have to provide you with one. I don’t know what happens if the language you speak isn’t common though, because what happens if they don’t have a translator for that language that they can easily find? So I’m not sure the specifics of the law.
