Can someone call themselves a kpop fan if they only follow one group? (1 Viewer)

They'd have to say yes if the group they like is Kpop otherwise it wouldn't make sense but I wouldn't go around saying I'm a Kpop fan if I only like one group especially if the group you like isn't one that'll come to most peoples mind immediately as you'll have to go through the more prominent groups first.

sure, if they're a fan of the general kpop sound or concept but only stan one group. in my case though, i stan svt but rarely listen to kpop anymore so i wouldn't really say im a kpop fan

Going against the grain: I think it's a little weird to say "I like kpop" if what you mean is "I like [group]." Just like it'd be weird to say you're super into rap music, but in actuality, you only like Eminem. Or that you're obsessed with makeup, but actually you only sometimes put on lipstick. Or that you're a huge car guy, but what you mean is that you think Teslas are kinda cool. I kinda feel like saying you're into an entire genre or subculture means you'd have at least some base familiarity with the genre/subculture, but if you only follow one act in the whole genre, then... you don't like rap, you like Eminem.

It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but if someone told me they "liked kpop" and I tried to be excited with them, and found out they had no idea who any of the major acts are, none of the new releases, had no idea what was meant by "YG" or "SM," and it turned out they heard Gangnam Style and liked it... I would walk away from that conversation thinking they don't like kpop, they like Gangnam Style. And that's fine, it's just very imprecise to say otherwise.

i agree. i mean people can call themselves whatever, but ultimately i too feel like you'd need to have some amount of familiarity with the genre/style/wtv before claiming to be a fan of the full thing.

that said, this can lead to a (slightly) slippery slope where you somehow think your fave is better than, and therefore somehow beyond their genre of origin (in this case kpop). btspoppers come to mind but i'm sure there's others in other fandoms/subcultures. not that they should be taken very seriously ofc

if u only like 1 kpop artist and dont listen to any other kpop, I dont think its right to call yourselve a kpop fan.
you can call yourselve a fan of that artist, that fine, but my definition of a kpop fan is someone that listens to kpop in general, so several artists.

Maybe you should know some more groups to call yourself a K-Pop fan in general, but it's ok to stan only one group then. I listened exclusively to Dreamcatcher before I got deeper into K-Pop.

Honestly I don't think you should. You can absolutely call yourself a fan of that specific group, but if you're not even interested in the whole genre as a whole, it doesn't count

since we must remember that KPS and other kpop forums or kpop subreddits are an echo chamber
we are dedicated enough kpop fans to not only like kpop (and have some kpop knowledge as a whole) but also enough to make an account on a kpop forum

an interesting question then arises that at what point does one consider themselves a kpop fan (if liking one group doesn't really meet such criteria)
