You can ascend, and you can descend, but can you scend?

Turns out, no, not really. Scend is a word that technically exists in English, but it’s not where ascend and descend come from. Ascend and descend come from French, but even in French the non prefix version wasn’t used much at that point. However, there are some English words descended from that root that may seem surprising, such as the word scan.

The French descend means to go down, often stairs

Scend in that form didn’t really make it to old French, not without major sound and meaning changes (ex. Escalader meaning to climb). The last notable “scend” word was back in Latin, for the word scandere, which meant to climb. In Latin that was the un prefixed version of ascend and descend.

the lift of a wave, or the upward movement of a pitching ship. It can also be used as a related verb regarding someone/something lurching forward from a swell or the movement of a ship. But it’s thought that scend actually comes from ascend as a back formation many centuries after ascend/descend were first used

Whelmed is still a word that technically exists, it’s just a bit archaic because it’s specifically about waves crashing over the sides of a boat and that’s become a bit less relevant
