The Great Donair Bidding War is not just an auction anymore — it’s a battle of pride, prejudice and the potential possibilities for a six-foot latex-and-rubber version of a beloved late-night snack.
It’s led to the great donair houses of this country facing off over an electronic auction site, to bids and proxy bids for thousands of dollars flying back and forth from east to west, to offers appearing and mysteriously disappearing.
If not a battle for the very soul of the donair, it is, at the least — and perhaps fittingly in a contest so wildly embraced by social media — a battle for its constitution.
At stake? Ostensibly, it’s a donair costume just over six feet tall and two feet wide, and, according to the website, in excellent, but “dusty” condition.
“Comes with silver colored Body Suit for that authentic tinfoil look!” trumpets the Alberta government online auction site excitedly.
As of Thursday evening, there had already been more than 600 bids for the donair costume — which went on the block last week — the highest reaching more than $7,000.
