what are your thoughts on some recent CGI anime? beastars, promare, and the berserk movies look absolutely amazing, but then theres cases like berserk 2016 or fist of the blue sky: re genesis.

I prefer hand drawn. I haven't watched any fully CGI anime (yet) so all of my anime CGI experience aside from a few very short clips of those CGI animes are from the little bits of CGI inserted into mainly hand drawn series. There's nothing inherently wrong with CGI in anime per se but it's a big problem when you can notice the difference between the CG and hand drawn, CGI characters tend to move in a very different way to hand drawn which isn't bad in of itself but it can completely take you out of the anime if it's too obvious which is my main problem with it. At the same time if the CG is done well enough so that it's barely noticable if at all then it's actually quite an asset. For example it was used for the titans pretty much exclusively in season 4 of Attack on Titan and while previous seasons have had some scenes with CG titans they did do a lot of hand drawn too, you can sort of notice the different sort of movement CG has in season 4 but at the same time the titans have never looked so detailed and moved so smoothly since there's a lot of line work which is very time consuming for animators which sometimes affected the animation (not in an obvious way, only if you very closely analysed it mind you). Nowadays I think CGI is getting harder and harder to spot in most anime but sometimes people still complain like it's clear as day even if the studio actually did a pretty good job but even if I can't see it in that specific scene people are complaining about there are still plenty of scenes where the CGI was obvious to me but others didn't notice it so I think it just varies person to person.

Overall hand drawn is still preferred for me and probably will be for the foreseeable future but i'm starting to not hate CGI as much anymore with fully CG anime making it's own little league and good CGI directors making it much harder to spot in primarily hand drawn series, it still really bugs me sometimes when I spot it though, I don't mind so much if it's something that would otherwise severely overwork the animators like the titans or something that just looks better in CG like some scenes in Demon Slayer and back with Attack on Titan again with the CGI backgrounds but sometimes CG can just be really unnecessary in mainly hand drawn animation where i'd rather just wait an extra season or two for them to do it properly rather than cut some very obvious corners

very well written and pretty much exactly my opinion on CGI next to not just hand-drawn anime but hand-drawn animation as a whole. if you want a good fully CGI anime i recommend the recent move promare! not only is the animation gorgeous but the story is pretty well done too. if you like gurren lagann or kill la kill, its animated/written by the same teams.

edit: i had been lead to believe that promare was fully/mostly animated with CGI but it turns out that was incorrect; my bad!

cgi has come long way, some best looking animes couldn't have been achieved with just hand drawn for example demon slayer that has both. but i'd still say majority of cgi in anime is still bad and just used to cut cost and production time.
