In 1766, the Nottingham cheese riot happened due to cheese scalpers. During a time of food shortages, some merchants bought cheese in Nottingham with the intention of selling it in other parts of England. People surrounded the merchants and demanded that the cheese remain in Nottingham rather than being transported to another area. This eventually led to several days of violence. Boats of cheese were seized, roadblocks were set up, cheese was looted, and the military was called in. One person was killed and more wounded.
