Chapter 1
My name is Shelby Harding, and I’m 20 years old. When I was sixteen, I fell into a bad crowd and started going home with various guys. I eventually got pregnant, and nine months later, I gave birth to a baby girl, Madelyn Brooke Harding.
After Madelyn was born, I vowed to live a better life, but when she was just over a year old, I fell off the wagon. I soon became pregnant again, this time with boy/girl twins. My dad threatened to disown me if I didn’t give at least one of them a family name, so I named them Naomi Patricia and Parker Nathaniel Harding, Naomi’s middle name being after my paternal grandmother.
As soon as the twins were born, I called their potential fathers and had them tested for DNA. According to the results, the twins belonged to a guy from Florida named Brody Mann. We dated long-distance for a year before I moved in with him, where I stayed until we broke up almost two years later. Now, the kids and I are back in my hometown of Star City, Arkansas, living with my sister Erin.

“Mommy, are we there yet?” Madelyn asked me as I crossed the Louisiana-Texas line. Erin and I were taking her to Houston to see 5 Seconds of Summer, our favorite band.
“We just entered Texas,” Erin told her. “It’ll be another hour yet.”
“I want ice cream,” Madelyn complained.
“If we get ice cream now, it’ll spoil your dinner appetite,” I said. “Don’t you want dinner?”
“Yeah…”
Just then, I saw a sign for a Cracker Barrel at the next exit and took it. “We’re going to Cracker Barrel, honey,” I said.
“Do they have ice cream?”
“No, but they do have your favorite chicken fingers. How about that?”
Madelyn gasped. “With honey?!”
I laughed. “Yes, with honey.”

After dinner, we got to the arena about an hour before the doors were to open, which was a good thing because I desperately wanted to meet the band.
About forty minutes into the wait, I suddenly heard loud screaming coming from the fans. I couldn’t see what they were screaming about, so I asked the lady in front of us.
“Calum Hood just came out!” she said. “He’s way over there if you want to see him.”
The lady pointed down the path, and I thanked her and took Madelyn to see Calum, Erin following closely behind.
When he saw us approaching, Calum put his index finger up, indicating that he wasn’t ready yet. The girl he was talking to hugged him and bounced back to her spot. Then, Calum took a sip of water and walked towards us.
“Hello,” he said. “You have a cute kid there.”
“Thank you,” I said. “My sister and daughter are big fans of yours, just like me. I’m Shelby, by the way, and that’s Erin.”
“Nice to meet you.” Calum stooped down to Madelyn’s level. “And what’s your name, little girl?”
“Tell the man your name!” I said to Madelyn.
“Hi!” Madelyn said, giggling and putting her fingers in her mouth.
“This is Madelyn,” I said to Calum. “She’s turning four next week.”
“Well, hello, Madelyn! I’m Calum. Are you ready to see us perform?”
Madelyn nodded.
Just then, I saw Erin slip behind Calum’s ass to touch it. “Erin! What are you doing?!” I scolded.
“What, a girl can’t look at Calum’s ass?” Erin said. “You’ll thank me later.”
Chapter 2
Calum’s POV
After sound check, I plopped down on the couch backstage to play Grand Theft Auto and instantly felt something underneath my ass. I got up to see if I’d sat on something, but there was nothing there. Michael laughed when he saw how confused I was.
“Check your back pocket, dude,” he said.
I checked and, sure enough, someone had slipped a piece of paper into my pocket. I pulled it out and unfolded it to find the name Shelby Harding and a phone number. Luke peered over my shoulder to have a look.
“Ooh, who’s Shelby?” Luke asked mockingly.
I shot Luke a dirty look. “Nobody, okay? She’s just a fan!” I lied.
“Are you sure, mate?” Ashton asked. “I saw you blushing when Luke said her name.”
“I dare you to ask her out,” Luke challenged.
“No!” I protested, blushing.
Michael put a hand on my shoulder. “Cal, we’re your mates!” he said. “It’s okay if you have a crush. What does this Shelby look like?”
I sighed. “Alright, you got me. I met her when I was doing the meet and greet outside. She’s curvy with strawberry blond hair and hazel eyes. She came with her sister and three-year-old daughter. I suppose I’ll ask her out, but it’s just to hang out.”

Shelby’s POV
All three of us had a blast during the concert, especially Madelyn. She was dancing like crazy throughout the whole thing, despite the fact it lasted until well past her bedtime.
The next morning, we were on our way home, having stopped at a gas station in Carthage, Texas, when my phone rang. The caller ID showed a number with a foreign area code; I answered out of pure curiosity.
“Hey, Shelby?” I heard an Australian accent say. “This is Calum Hood; I got your number.”
My heart stopped for a second. “How the hell did you get my number?!” I demanded.
“I don’t know. I found it in my back pocket last night.”
It was then that I remembered Erin doing something behind Calum’s back last night. “Can you hold for just a minute?”
“Sure.”
Erin was coming out of the shop with a candy bar for Madelyn, so as soon as she got in, I said, “How dare you!”
Erin gasped. “What are you talking about?”
“You gave Calum my number, didn’t you?!”
“How did you know?”
“Well, I’m on the phone with Calum, so you can’t hide!”
“Okay, I did give him your number, but it was for your own good. You need a father figure!”
I rolled my eyes and took the phone off hold. “Sorry, that was my sister,” I said to Calum. “Apparently, she was the one who gave you my number. So, since we’re on the phone, what’s up?”
Calum laughed. “I wondered! I just wanted to see if you’d like to hang out sometime.”
“I’d usually say yes, but unfortunately, I’m not really ready to start dating yet.”
“This isn’t really a date per se; it’s just two people of the opposite gender hanging out. So what do you say?”
I considered this for a moment. “Well, you can’t say no to that. What did you have in mind?”
“The lads and I have a break in between shows, so I was thinking I could visit you, and we could go out for ice cream.”
“That sounds good. Meet me 1 pm on Monday at Cold Stone Creamery in Star City, Arkansas.”
“Star City, Arkansas…got it! Thanks, Shelby.”
“You’re welcome.”
