Because I think their antics are cute/funny and your stuck with my chicken craziness

1. Coyote Family
We’ve had this family of coyotes around our neighborhood for about a year now and a week ago my mom realized the family had pups. How did she know? Because the pups were at the back part of our backyard fence . Our flock is fine btw, she also reassured me that the pups weren’t at all interested in the chickens and just wanted to play with our large dog ( I guess they played together for a few minutes before the pups got spooked). But it’s still not something we want to happen again (even though I kinda wanted to see the cute coyote puppers ). We have to really be on the lookout because curious pups are bound to want to check out the easy prey and while some parts of our chickens run is deeply buried, there’s also some parts that aren’t so if they made it through our backyard fence they could easily get to the chickens. Also we have one tiny dog that we now don’t allow outside without our large dog with her. A few nights ago when I was doing my normal night routine by checking up on the chickens (counting and making sure everyone is okie dokie before I lock them up) I panicked because I only counted 9 (we have 10). I realized that I just miscounted because two of our hens were huddled extremely close together and it only looked like one chicken. Hopefully the coyotes will leave them alone, we’ve never lost a chicken to predators and I definitely don’t want that kind of death for any of them.

2. Mouse hunters
Forget pest control just get chickens because they’ll kill and eat anything, even mice. I have no idea where they found it, their food attracts small rodents so whenever one happens to get stuck in their run… Free chicken food I guess. Chickens are omnivores so it’s totally normal for them to eat rodents and whatnot, its sad for the mouse but I never notice the mice until well after their dead, if I ever am able to stop them killing a mouse I’ll definitely do my best to help the critter out.

3. Cotton wants her water
We still get nights where their water freezes and I have to go out and break the ice or change the water completely. One time I forgot to check their water and was getting ready to go back in the house when Cotton (hen) loudly let me know that she was unhappy. I’ve mentioned this before but Cotton is the most unique chicken I’ve ever met, and ngl its one of the reasons why I love her so much. She has so much character. But anyways, whenever she’s unhappy she’ll make a very loud sound to get your attention so she can get what she wants because she’s spoiled . I realized she was wanting a drink and couldn’t get one because it was frozen solid and the queen was very disappointed in me for forgetting about her precious water. I just thought it was funny because the second she realized I was going back inside she made her obnoxiously loud noise like : “You forgot to give me water peasant!”
Then when she got what she wanted she was happy again.

4. Great example of how daunting chickens can be
Yesterday my mom was weeding and we always give weeds (not the pokey ones of course) to our flock. They haven’t had weeds in a while because everything’s been frozen so they were EXTREMELY excited according to my mom. So much so that she was worried they’d all run out of the run if she tried to bring the weeds into them. I don’t blame her, 10 excited chickens who know you have a favorite treat will push through each other and you to get it . So she put the weeds to the side so I could take it into them when I got back from work and they enjoyed their treat very much.

Cotton has cat-like qualities just from that description! I love that for her! (so cute too! The name!)

Also oo....the Cyotes are sneaky things. I hope you get to see the pups one day!
