The Silk Road was a major land trade route that connected Europe, India, Central Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and East Asia mostly, while the Indian Ocean was a maritime route that connected places like East Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, India, the Middle East, and East Africa. In the west the silk roads usually gets the attention because Europe wasn’t involved in the Indian Ocean trade, but both were hugely important historically.
