Well, majority of her hate was because of her pictures and video's right?
People who wrote that could say it was their opinion about her, thus freedom of speech
(think about the classic "she must be crazy" comment she got on everything she posted)

However, (idk in what instance they did it for Taeyeon) if it were someone who made up lies out of the blue and/or starts rumors,
then they could sue for defamation. In that case, the goal is clearly to ruin the idol's career and/or reputation.

It probably wouldn't have mattered even if SM had sued each and every one of those commenters, because the comments never die. She would've known that the people with their nasty comments still exist, and those words still could've stayed with her for ages. Like, just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not there. Not saying that it WOULDN'T have helped, but not saying that it would've either, considering how dire one's mental state can be.

(I'd also like to emphasize on that it's never black and white why someone is depressed and/or resorts to self-harm. We here have no idea what has happened behind the scenes and whether SM did or did not do much to help her. Healing is also a process, that no one can force upon you. Help is of course, most of the time, helpful, but in the end there's not always much an outsider can do.)

Free speech has limits. Even if someone says something true, they can be sued for defamation if it damages character

It wouldn't have completely fixed the issue but it would have helped.
Even going after the journalists that posted those articles about her and made a living off of dragging her for her Insta posts.
People were sexually harassing this woman, spreading deepfakes about her to the point where her top articles and search results were sexually explicit and abusive.
They did nothing to help her.
They rarely act on behalf of their artists unlike other companies. SM artists always had a larger target on their backs than other idols: Irene, Yeri, Taeyeon, Krystal

Still, a lot of those users are anonymous and use VPNs, maybe not a big deal but are you willing to invest 1000s of money to sue all those people who send hateful stuff?
Keep in mind that SM is still the #1 company, regardless of what people say. Their artists are kept under a loop 24/7 and are extremely targeted for hate comments
If every artist has 1000s of malicious commenters, and you have to sue each commenter, will you be paying that bill?

The issue ARE the commenters and the media but suing won't help. Keep in mind that SM is still a business, and thus needs money to be kept around. The only way this issue will get resolved is that people will get a head on their bodies and think about the consequences, and that mental health gets taken more seriously there. The only thing SM can do is give their artists professional help and follow them up, which seemed to be the case.

I get that this angers people but they really have to start looking at other points of views as well. I am also hurt by this but I've seen people say that the hate comments should stop whilst attacking the company who helped her as far as they could.
