yeah, I'm doing this one before I do Anna's romance with Michael, simply bc I didn't really touch on Savannah and Calum's relationahip much in MTAF.

Plot: Savannah and Calum think they have a great relationship - they've been dating for eight months now and are expecting their first child soon. But what will happen when Calum meets her parents, including a very old-fashioned dad who doesn't believe in sex before marriage, for the first time? And not only that, but someone from Calum's past wants to shake things up, and not in a good way.

I'm already two chapters in (so I'm on chapter 3 now), and I'll post the first one later. Right now, I need to get at least one hour of sleep. lol

update: I ended up getting all of seven hours (ig I was more sleepy than I realized) and then I forgot to post it. lol but here's chapter 1!

Savannah Colton was fast asleep when she felt the touch of her boyfriend Calum’s kiss on her neck. She opened her eyes to see him smiling at her.

“Good morning, sunshine,” he greeted her. “I’m going to get ready to head for the airport. What about you?”

“Mm… but I’m so comfy here,” Savannah mumbled, pulling the sheets over her head.

“Do I have to drag you out of bed? Because I won’t hesitate to.”

“It’s too early, Cal!”

Calum laughed. “Sav, it’s 8:30 in the morning. It’s way past ‘too early’!” When she still didn’t budge, he added, “Don’t make me get the dog involved!”

The dog in question is Calum’s white German shepherd named Lex. He’d adopted Lex as a puppy, and they’ve been the best of friends ever since.

Savannah finally gave in and got up, but not before stretching and yawning.

“Did you get the girls out of bed?”

“I did, and they’re playing in the living room before breakfast.”

“When does the plane leave?”

“It starts boarding at noon, so we need to be there by ten. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to meet your parents for the first time.”

“Oh, you’ll love my mom. But I’m a little worried about my dad, especially since I’m dating a guy who already has a child.”

“I’m sure we’ll get on well anyway. What does he have against blokes with kids?”

“He’s just really old-fashioned. He wasn’t a fan of me having Ariana out of wedlock, so I can only imagine how he’ll perceive you.”

Calum shrugged. “I’m up for the challenge of winning him over. Let’s just get packed and ready to go.”

“Hey, y’all,” Daisy Landon said when she saw Savannah and Calum coming downstairs. Daisy is the girlfriend of Luke Hemmings, one of Calum’s bandmates in 5 Seconds of Summer. “Are you off to see the parents?”

“Yeah, we are,” Savannah said. “Ari, are you excited to see Nonny and Poppy again?”

“Yeah!” Ariana squealed, jumping up and down to show her enthusiasm.

“Do you want to call her and let her know we’re on our way?” Calum asked.

“Uh-huh!”

Savannah called Carol on FaceTime, and Carol answered on the third ring.

“Hi, honey!” she greeted her daughter. “Are you about to head up?”

“Yep,” Savannah said. “I’ve got somebody who wants to say hi.”

Ariana came closer to Savannah, who then picked her up. She beamed when she saw Carol on the screen, in all her gray-haired, glasses-wearing glory.

“Ari, who is that?” Savannah asked.

“Hi, Nonny,” Ariana said to Carol.

“Hello, Ari-Belle!” Carol said with a smile. “You’re getting so big! How old are you now?”

“She just turned three in December,” Savannah said. “Calum can’t wait to meet you guys.”

“Oh, we can’t wait to meet him! From the way you described him, he sounds like quite a looker!”

Savannah laughed awkwardly. “Well, you definitely won’t be disappointed. We’ll be landing in Chicago at about six.”

“Oh, good! You’ll be home in time for dinner. I’m planning to make your favorite dish, chicken curry.”

“Yum! Well, I’ll call you again whenever we get to town.”

“Okay, sweetie. I love you!”

“Love you, too.”

Savannah and Calum got into Chicago just after four that evening, and after they retrieved their bags, they went to pick up their rental car. Calum had called ahead so they wouldn’t have to wait long, much to Savannah’s pleasure.

“Hey, I know you!” the male employee remarked to Calum. “You’re Calum Hood!”

“From 5 Seconds of Summer, yes,” Calum confirmed. “And this is my girlfriend Savannah and her daughter Ariana. She’s a big fan of ours.”

The employee searched for Calum’s reservation as he spoke. “Oh, I heard you started dating a fan! Nice catch, dude!”

“Thank you, mate. What’s your name?”

“I’m Aidan; it’s a pleasure to meet you all. Do you want to take a selfie with me? I’d be so honored if you could.”

“Sure thing!”

After he took a selfie with his fan, Aidan found the reservation and verified with Calum that he’d rented a silver Lexus.

“That’s correct,” Calum said. “Are you ready, Sav?”

“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be,” Savannah said.

“How long have you been a fan, Aidan?” Calum asked when they were walking to the car.

“Honestly, since your YouTube days,” Aidan said. “I still can’t believe you’re going on tour for your third album next month! I had a garage band myself, but we broke up after high school because we all wanted to go in different directions musically.”

“Do you still make music now?” Savannah asked.

“Not famously, no. I just do it in my free time.”

Chapter 2

“Is this the house?” Calum asked when he pulled up to Greg and Carol’s place. They had been in and out of conversation for the entire ride.

“Yes, it is,” Savannah confirmed. She nudged a sleeping Ariana and said, “Ari, we’re at Nonny and Poppy’s.”

Ariana stirred and opened her eyes, then unbuckled her seatbelt and hopped out of the car; Nell followed suit.

Cal, would you be an angel and carry our bags in?” Savannah requested.

“Of course, my love,” Calum agreed.

“Hello!” Savannah called out when she stepped inside with Ariana holding her hand. Carol was cooking in the kitchen, and Savannah immediately smelled the aroma of curry powder and other spices. “Ooh, dinner smells good!”

Carol turned the burner off – she was done, anyway – and wiped her hands on her apron before she came out to greet Savannah.

“Hello, Savannah,” she said, throwing her arms around Savannah. “How was the flight?”

“Cal and I had to break up so many fights between our girls,” Savannah confessed. “They love each other, but they just need to learn to share.”

Carol laughed. “Like mother, like daughter! You and Rachel were the exact same, but you grew out of it by the time you got to kindergarten.”

“Hi, Nonny!” Ariana cheered, holding her arms out. Carol picked her up and kissed her on the cheek.

“How’s my youngest granddaughter?” Carol asked. “Your mommy tells me you’re in preschool now! Is this true?”

“She is,” Savannah said, beaming with pride. “Well, she was before, technically, but that was more like a Mother’s Day Out kind of thing. But she and Calum’s daughter are in the same class this year!”

“Oh, that’s good. So, she has a little friend to play with.”

Just then, Calum came in with the luggage and joined the conversation. “Hello,” he said.

“Oh, hi!” Carol gushed. “You must be Calum!”

“Yes, I’m Calum Hood,” Calum said with an outstretched hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Colton.”

“Same here, sweetheart,” Carol said, shaking Calum’s hand. “Dinner is almost ready; we just need help setting the table. I’ll call Mr. Colton downstairs so he can help, too.”

Carol went to the bottom of the stairwell and called out Greg’s name. He came down shortly thereafter and smiled when he saw Savannah.

“Hey, Sav!” he greeted her with one of his bear hugs.

“Hi, Daddy,” Savannah returned. She wrapped her arm around Calum’s waist and added, “This is my boyfriend, Calum Hood. Calum, this is my dad, Greg.”

“Nice to meet you, sir,” Calum said, extending his hand. Greg gave it a firm grip and a shake.

“Likewise,” Greg said. “Well, would you like to help set the table?”

“Sure.”

“When should we tell them about the pregnancy?” Savannah whispered to Calum.

The night after Daisy announced her pregnancy, Savannah and Calum had both caught a serious case of baby fever and had sex. This resulted in Savannah also being pregnant, and she’s having her baby in May, while Daisy is due early next month.

“Not yet,” Calum whispered back. “Wait until we’re all together.”

When they were all at the dinner table, Carol said grace on behalf of the whole group, and they dug in.

“So, how did you meet?” Carol asked.

“I got a random call from him one night,” Savannah said.

“Well, I wouldn’t say it was random,” Calum said. “There was a purpose behind it; you were just shocked because I somehow got your number.”

“How he got my number is a long story, though. But he asked me out on a double date with one of his bandmates and his lady friend, and we all hit it off.”

But Greg wasn’t taking the “long story” excuse for an answer. “How did you get Savannah’s number, Calvin, if she didn’t give it to you herself?”

“Well, Savannah’s sister… Rachel, is it? She was working at the cat café that my mate had taken his current girlfriend to as part of their first date. She basically gave him Savannah’s number, and he gave it to me so I could call her.”

Greg rubbed his chin, earning a death glare from Carol.

“Honey, he’s great for her! At least he’s not Jason!”

Greg’s lips slowly curled into a frown, a sign to Savannah that he was skeptical about this pairing.

“Daddy, don’t be such a skeptic!” Savannah protested. “I’m not going to break up with Calum just because you don’t like him!”

“It’s not necessarily that I don’t like him, Savannah,” Greg said in a serious tone. “It’s the fact that you, once again, got pregnant out of wedlock.”

“How did you—”

Greg cut her off. “I can see it in your belly! Is Calvin the father?”

“It’s CALUM, Daddy! And I’m a grown woman; I can date and have sex as I please!”

“Greg, what happened to you being supportive of our daughter’s dating endeavors?” Carol scolded.

“I am being supportive,” Greg argued. “I just don’t like Savannah having sex without getting married.”

“Well, so, what if we’re expecting? We’re only humans!” Calum countered. “And just because this Jason bloke was bad for Savannah, doesn’t mean I’m the same bloke!”

“He’s in the very band whose fandom Jason made fun of me for being in!” Savannah added. “Why on God’s green earth would he ridicule his own band?”

Greg’s frown almost turned into a smile, but it came out as a mere grimace. “I’ll be watching you, Calvin,” he said.

“It’s Calum,” he said calmly.

“Whatever! I don’t care if your name is actually Jehoshaphat Aloysius McGillicuddy the Third – if you make one wrong move on my dear daughter Savannah, you’re going to regret ever calling her in the first place. Got it?”

Calum gulped. Of all the girls he’s dated in the past, he’s only ever been threatened by her father one other time, and that was with Nell’s maternal grandfather. Well, who would blame the old man, anyway? Calum had impregnated the dude’s teenage daughter, for crying out loud! But the nerves were still the same as they were before.

In the present, Carol shot Greg another death glare. “Gregory!” she chastised.

“Hey, I’m just trying to prevent another toxic relationship!”

“It’s NOT going to turn toxic!” Savannah argued. “Come on, Calum; let’s go somewhere else.”

“I’ll save some leftovers for you, honey,” Carol promised as Savannah and Calum rose from their seats.

“Thanks, Mom,” Savannah said. “Girls, be good for Nonny and Poppy while Calum and I go out.”

“Right, I want you to be on your best, best behavior and do whatever this nice couple tells you to do,” Calum added. “We’ll be back to say goodnight.”

“Okay,” the girls chorused.

Chapter 3

“Sorry about my dad,” Savannah said meekly to Calum as they drove away. They had decided to go for an aimless night drive around town. “Just try not to let him get to you.”

“Nah, you’re good,” Calum said. “Thank you for pulling me out, though.”

“I could tell you were getting nervous. I honestly can’t stand my dad sometimes. I mean, I love him to bits, but he has his sour side, too.”

“Yeah, I have an interesting relationship with my dad, too. Actually, it’s nonexistent, so consider yourself lucky that he’s even in the picture.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. My mum divorced him when I was the girls’ age and my sister was eight; we haven’t been in contact ever since.”

“Oh, wow! What about your mom? What’s your relationship like with her?”

“Oh, we’re very close, just like you are with your mum. We’re going to Sydney just before we take our mini-break between tour shows, if you want to fly over and meet her.”

“Oh, I’d love to!”

Calum laughed. “I love the way your voice gets high-pitched when you get chuffed.”

“And I love the way your voice gets deep when you’re being serious. I heard how you commanded the girls to behave. Very impressive!”

Calum shrugged. “I’ve had practice and gone to parenting classes. The latter was done on Mum’s orders, by the way.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t blame her. You became a dad pretty much out of the blue, didn’t you?”

“Yes, and Nell is a handful just like her mummy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Calum spotted a little restaurant called Casey’s and pointed it out to Savannah.

“What’s Casey’s?” he asked.

“Oh, just a mom-and-pop burger joint. They’re good, but nothing compared to homecooked meals.”

“Are you not hungry anymore? You barely touched your food at dinner.”

“Yeah, let’s keep going. Besides, I want to see where this road takes us.”

Calum made the turn into the driveway against Savannah’s wishes. “I say we eat dinner here. Final answer.”

Calum had taken on that sexy deep voice again when he said this, telling Savannah that he meant business.

Savannah sighed. “Alright, let’s go.”

When it came time to place their orders, Calum and Savannah both selected the barbecue bacon burger, at Savannah’s recommendation.

“Tell me more about your ex,” Savannah prompted Calum. “You haven’t said a word about her for our whole relationship.”

“That’s because she was a nutcase,” Calum explained. “I don’t talk about nutcases.”

“Well, how was she a nutcase? Besides the fact that she sprung the baby on you out of nowhere, I mean?”

Calum sighed, but he decided to give into Savannah’s curiosity. After all, he couldn’t keep his feelings bottled up forever, not when he already had a new girlfriend.

“Okay, she was a fan just like you are. We met during our second gig opening for One Direction. Don’t ask how I found out about Nell; it’s a long story.”

But Savannah took this as a challenge. “Okay, tell me.”

Calum cracked his knuckles as he prepared his thoughts. “Nell’s name was originally Chlamydia.”

Savannah’s heart dropped in shock. “No way! After the STD? You’re trolling!”

“I wish I was, honestly. When she dropped her off at my flat, Georgia left me a note saying, ‘We had sex nine months ago, and now you have Chlamydia.’ Come to find out, that was actually what Georgia had bestowed upon our daughter.”

“Oh, wow! How long did it take you to get it changed?”

Calum clutched his hair with his hands as he remembered. “Too long. And as soon as my mum caught wind that she was suddenly a grandmother, she made me get tested straight away. Thank God I didn’t have it!”

“Oh, yeah! You went through hell and half of—”

“Don’t say it, Sav,” Calum said through gritted teeth. “Let’s talk about something more pleasant, like baby names!”

“Yeah, I agree. Do you have any ideas?”

“How about Chloe for a girl or Lachlan for a boy?”

“No, how about not? Chloe reminds me of that stuff kidnappers drug their victims with. Besides, don’t you say it more like ‘Chlorie’ in your accent?”

“Ah, yeah… I suppose you have a point. But do you like Lachlan, at least?”

“No, it has the syllable ‘lock’ in it, which I don’t like. I’m convinced we’re having a girl, anyway. What about Isabella instead of Chloe?”

Calum cringed at this name. “Oh, like in Twilight? Sorry, but I came across a crossover fan fiction one time – it was 5SOS and Twilight – and it was so cringeworthy. The main character was the same as it was in the Twilight books, Isabella… so yeah, it’s a no from me.”

“So, Isabella is out of the question, then?”

“Yeah, I’m afraid so. But surely, there are other girl names you can think of, correct?”

“How about Anabella?”

Just then, a waitress came to serve their meals. Calum smiled when she saw the nametag: Noah.

“Calum, we’re on a date!” Savannah scolded. “Why are you flirting with her?”

“I’m not flirting!” Calum defended with his hands up. “It’s just her nametag I’m looking at.”

“Yeah, well, you’re making me nervous.”

“And I’m lesbian, anyway,” the waitress added. “But here’s your food; enjoy your meals!”

“Thank you,” Calum said with another smile. This prompted Savannah to kick him in the shin. “Ouch! Sorry.”

When he and Savannah were done with dinner, Calum paid the bill, and they continued the drive and their conversation about names.

“What about the name of that waitress you thought I was flirting with?” Calum suggested. “Noah’s a nice name.”

“Noah?” Savannah asked, scrunching her nose. “On a girl?”

Calum shrugged. “Well, it worked for Noah Cyrus.”

“Her siblings are Miley and Trace,” Savannah pointed out. “I’m not naming our child Noah. What about Zoe?”

“Zoe is pretty, and it rhymes with my original suggestion of Chloe. I do like other names better, though, and besides, Luke’s cousin is called Zoe.”

“Cal, you’ve been putting down all my name suggestions so far,” Savannah complained.

“I know, and it sucks. But I’m sure the right name will come along somehow.”

Chapter 4

Savannah and Calum ended up driving until 10 pm, a couple of hours after they started their journey. By this time, it had started sleeting.

“Do you want me to drive?” Savannah offered when she realized Calum was struggling to control the car.

“No, I’ve got this,” Calum said. “It’s not like I don’t know where I’m going, because we’re literally taking the very route we came on.”

“No, I mean—”

Savannah was cut off by a sharp jolt as the car started swerving on thin ice.

“CALUM!” she freaked. “Step on the brakes!”

“I’m trying, babe!” Calum shouted. That was when they crashed into another car. Two airbags deployed – one from the steering wheel and the other from the dashboard – and Savannah froze in shock like she was about to faint.

“You alright, Sav?” she heard Calum’s voice asking, the last thing she remembered before blacking out.

No response.

“Savannah? My love, wake up!” Calum shouted, slapping her face. He then felt for a pulse and a heartbeat, feeling a sense of relief when he found both.

Calum’s fingers flew over the dial pad as he called 911 on his cellphone.

“Champaign 911, what’s your emergency?” the operator asked.

“My pregnant girlfriend is unconscious!” Calum freaked. He could only imagine the worst scenario: that Savannah would miscarry or the baby would be stillborn.

“Sir, your pregnant girlfriend is unconscious?” the operator repeated.

“Yes, she’s 33 weeks! Get an ambulance here right now!”

“Okay, where are you located?”

“I don’t know… I’m not from here. But we were in a car accident. Oh, gosh, this isn’t even my car – it’s a rental!”

“No worries, sir. Just tell me the license plate number of the car, and we’ll find you. Do you know what road you’re on?”

“Yeah, I-57 going south towards Rantoul.”

The operator asked Calum a few more questions regarding Savannah’s current state, and a few seconds after he hung up, an ambulance and two cop cars arrived at the scene.

“Where’s your girlfriend?” one of the EMTs asked when they brought out the gurney.

“She’s in there,” Calum said, his voice shaking with fear. “She’s called Savannah Colton.” He pointed towards the car, and the EMTs retrieved Savannah from her seat and put her on the gurney.

“And what’s her date of birth?”

Calum spent the next few minutes answering questions about Savannah and about the accident, and when they were done, one of the cops offered to take him to Carol and Greg’s house, since he didn’t have a way to get there.

As soon as the cop dropped him off, Calum rang the doorbell to be let in. Carol was wearing a long pink robe and curlers in her hair, and she didn’t have her glasses on.

“Calum?” she asked, surprised to see that her daughter was absent. “Come inside, out of the cold! Where’s Savannah?”

Calum sighed. “She’s in the hospital after we had an accident on 57,” he reported sadly. “We were coming home when the car slipped on the ice and crashed into another car.” He shed a tear. “I’m so sorry, Mrs. Colton!”

“What?!” Greg yelled from the living room. He was watching football on TV and heard the conversation. “You put my daughter in the hospital, Calvin?! How dare you!”

Calum felt sick to his stomach as he heard the words come out, but Carol caught on and put a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“No, he didn’t, Greg!” Carol argued. “They slipped on thin ice; he couldn’t help it! Calum, do you want to sleep in the guest room? You’ve had a long night, I’m sure.”

“You have no bloody idea… thank you.”

Savannah woke up in a hospital room, hooked up to medical equipment and with a band of gauze wrapped around her head and another on her face. This made her very confused, because the last thing she remembered was being in the Lexus right after the accident.

After she fumbled around for the pager, Savannah paged the hospital staff to let them know she was conscious again. Momentarily, the door opened, and a pudgy black woman in uniform came in.

“Oh, you’re awake,” she remarked with a smile. “Good morning.”

“Morning?!” Savannah repeated. “What time is it?”

“Six o’clock. You were knocked out cold all night. We delivered your baby, by the way.”

Savannah’s heart stopped for a split second, almost setting off the heart machine. “What?!”

“We had to, honey; the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. In fact, you should feel lucky; if we hadn’t acted as fast as we did, your little one would’ve been a goner.”

“Is it a boy or a girl?”

“It’s a girl, and she’s currently in the NICU. Of course, she doesn’t have a name yet, so we’ve just been calling her Beanie because she’s the smallest NICU baby we have right now.

“Oh, we don’t have one, either. I was thinking Zoe, but I don’t think my boyfriend is completely onboard with that.”

“No worries; we’ll let you discuss it with him. But Zoe would be a very appropriate name for her – it means ‘life’.”

Savannah rolled her eyes. “One of his friend’s cousin is named that, so he says we can’t really use it.”

“Oh, I see. Well, just let us know what you come up with.”

“Thank you. So, what else happened? What’s with the bandages?”

“Your face got first- and second-degree burns from the hot airbag, and you also broke your skull. We stitched your wound up and inserted skin grafts last night.”

“Oh,” was all Savannah could say. But she didn’t have to say anything else, because the nurse was able to read her like an open book.

“You’re afraid your boyfriend won’t love you anymore,” she guessed.

“Yeah, that’s the gist of it.”

“We get that a lot from facial-injury patients. They start to feel insecure about the way they look… but honey, I’m sure your boyfriend will still find you attractive. I mean, isn’t it the inner beauty that counts?”

“Yeah, that’s true.”

Chapter 5

Calum didn’t end up arising until 9 am, and he was getting out of the shower when his phone rang, interrupting the music he was playing. Hoping to God it was Savannah, he answered it on speakerphone while he dried himself off.

“Savannah?!” he exclaimed.

“Hey, Calum,” Savannah greeted him. “I’m awake!”

“Yeah, I see that. When did you come around?”

“Like three hours ago. They just now let me see the baby, which was what I was waiting for before I called you.”

“You could’ve called me sooner, love. I was still asleep, but I wouldn’t have minded at all.”

“Yeah, but then I fell back asleep after I talked to the nurse. They had to wake me up when it was safe to see the baby.”

“What is it, a girl?”

“Yeah, and I think we should name her after the amazing nurse who was with me when I woke up. Her name was Zinnia – isn’t that unique?”

Calum smiled at the sound of this name. “Zinnia – I like it! Actually, Channing Zinnia happens to be one of my favorite actors, especially in ‘The Vow’.”

“Me too! I was also thinking we could use my mom’s name as her middle.”

“Carol?”

“Carolyn; she just goes by Carol. It would be Zinnia Carolyn Hood.”

“Well, I can’t argue with that. Zinnia Carolyn, it is! I’ll be over soon, alright?”

“Thank you, Cal.”

“You’re quite welcome, Sav.”

When Carol drove him to the hospital, Calum asked about Savannah and the baby.

“Take the elevator over there to the third floor,” the receptionist said. “She’s in 320. The NICU is closer, though; it’s on the second floor”

“Thank you,” Calum said. He and Carol went up to the second floor and followed the signs directing them to the NICU.

“Hi, we’re here to see my granddaughter,” Carol said to the L&D receptionist.

“Okay,” she said. “Baby Hood?”

“Yes, the one you’ve been calling Beanie,” Calum said.

“Okay, she’s down this hallway, in the first room on the right.”

“Thank you, dearie,” Carol said.

Calum and Carol quickly found Zinnia’s room and knocked on the door. They were let in by a nurse who was about Carol’s age.

“Hi, I’m Calum Hood,” Calum introduced himself. “I’m here to see my daughter.”

“And I’m Carol, her Nonny,” Carol added.

“Okay,” the nurse said, stepping aside to let them in. “Be careful, because she’s still a little fragile.”

“Oh, look how tiny!” Carol marveled when she saw the Zinnia in the incubator.

“Yeah, I know,” Calum agreed, reaching inside to touch Zinnia. “Hello, my little love. I’m your daddy!”

“So, what’s her prognosis?” Carol asked. “This is my first grandchild who’s ever been born prematurely.”

“Oh, it’s actually very good,” the nurse said. “I’d say they have about a 95% survival rate. She’ll spend about three weeks here, and then she’ll go home.”

“Three weeks?” Calum asked flatly.

“Well, it could be shorter if she hits her milestones more quickly than we expect.”

“Like what?” Carol asked. “Breathing?”

“Yeah, that’s one of them. We also watch for how she’s feeding, her weight, and if she gets an infection… but that’s pretty unlikely for her since the only complication she had was the umbilical cord being wrapped around her neck.”

Zinnia picked this moment to wrap her hand around Calum’s finger. Her grip was fairly weak, but it still pulled at his heartstrings. “Oh, look – she likes me!” he stage-whispered. “Hi, Zinnia… I love you.”

Calum and Carol spent the next few minutes having a friendly chat with the nurse before they finally left to see Savannah.

“Come in,” Savannah said when Calum knocked.

Calum and Carol walked in and saw that the left side of Savannah’s face was covered in bandages. Calum dropped his jaw at this, to which Savannah frowned.

“You don’t like the way I look right now, do you?” she asked.

“Why would you even think like that, sweetheart?” Carol added. “He loves you!”

“You could literally be wearing a paper bag, and I’d find you beautiful,” Calum said, coming closer to the bed. “I was just surprised, is all. Do you remember when Michael burnt his face in a pyro accident in 2015?” Savannah nodded. “The fans still thought he was handsome even with the bandages, and I think the same about you. So, I saw Zinnia; she’s beautiful, just like you!”

“I know. The nurse said she’ll need to stay for three weeks, right?”

“Yeah, three to five,” Carol said. “Congratulations, sweetheart!”

“On what, though?” Savannah asked. “Getting in a car accident and having to have the baby delivered early?”

Calum knelt down by her side. “Savannah… this isn’t like you. What happened to the girl I fell in love with?”

“She was never a fan of hospitals, dear,” Carol said to Calum. “In fact, Ariana was a home birth.”

“Really?” Calum asked.

“Yeah,” Savannah said. “I had a botched rhinoplasty when I was three.”

“Ooh, that’s not fun! Tell me about it.”

“It all started when she was chasing a little boy around the playground at preschool,” Carol said with a laugh. “She fell on her face and busted her nose on the blacktop. We rushed her to the ER… heavens to Betsy, she was bleeding so hard! Now, this was before Yelp came along, so we didn’t really know what we were doing when we chose which hospital to go to.”

Calum leaned in to hear more. “Oh, this is getting good!”

“We just picked the most convenient one. It was an old, run-down place near the school with only a few beds, but we were desperate because she was about ready to go into shock.”

“Mom, don’t!” Savannah protested.

Carol didn’t listen. “Well, it turned out to be a deviated septum that would require surgery. We sent her in for the operation…”

“MOM!”

“What? It was getting juicy!” Calum argued.

Savannah sighed. “They basically botched my surgery because they were all quacks, and that’s why I hate hospitals.”

“Well, cheer up!”

Butterflies formed in Savannah’s stomach as Calum leaned in, brushed her hair out of her face, and kissed her on the lips.

@A_Vow_of_Silence plot point alert!

Chapter 6
Daisy’s scheduled induction was four days later, which would give Luke ample time to bond with their as yet unborn son before the band goes on the mini-tour for their upcoming third album. As soon as she woke up on the day of the appointment, March 1st, Daisy called her ex-fiancé Jesse to see if he could watch the kids while she and Luke were at the hospital.

“Well, sure!” he agreed. “I’ll bring my girlfriend as well.”

“Oh, what’s her name?”

“Her name is Roxanne; she moved here from Quebec a few months ago. She’s a really cool girl, so I’m excited for you to meet her.”

“Me too. The induction is at eleven, so can you be here by ten?”

“Absolutely! Give the kiddoes my love, would you?”

“Sure thing.”

“Did Jesse say yes?” Luke asked his girlfriend.

“Yeah, he and his girlfriend are coming at ten. Would you be a dear and get the twins out of bed, please? I’ll get Connor.”

“Sure.”

Daisy and Luke shared a quick kiss on the lips before Daisy got up and went to Connor’s room. She could hear him loudly playing with his toys, telling her he was already awake.

“Hey, buddy,” Daisy said to her son. “Guess what today is?”

“Um… my birthday?” Connor guessed.

“No, that’s in October, about seven months from now. It’s baby day!” Connor stared at her with a blank expression. “Your stepdad and I are going to the hospital today, and the next time you see me, bubba will be here!”

Connor’s baby blues glistened as he finally understood what Daisy was saying. “Oh! Do I get to play with him?”

“When he gets older, yeah. But for now, all he’s going to do is eat, sleep, cry, and eliminate… but you can certainly have first dibs on holding him. What would you like for breakfast?”

“Pancakes. Do we have any more Mickey ones?”

“We might! I’ll have to check the freezer, though. Come on.”

Connor followed Daisy downstairs, where Luke was already in the kitchen making breakfast. Meanwhile, Jade and Audrey were in their highchairs drinking their bottles.

“Luke, can you look in the freezer and see if we have any Mickey Mouse pancakes left?”

“Nah, we don’t; I already checked,” Luke said. “Would Connor like some French toast instead?”

“What’s French toast?” Connor asked, scrunching his nose.

“It’s a breakfast food like pancakes,” Daisy said. “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.”

Connor gave Daisy a confused look. “I’m not knocking anything,” he said. This got a giggle out of Daisy.

“It’s an expression, bud. It means ‘don’t say you don’t like it when you haven’t tried it.’”

After breakfast, Daisy and Luke worked to tidy up the house before Jesse and Roxanne got there. They finished just as the doorbell rang at ten. When Daisy opened it, she saw Jesse standing there next to a tall, curvy woman with long brown hair.

“Hey, Jess,” Daisy said. “Come on in, both of you.”

“Thank you,” the woman said, following Jesse inside. “You must be Daisy! I’m Roxanne; it’s nice to meet you. And…” She stopped in her tracks when she saw Luke. “Oh, my God! Jess, you didn’t tell me your ex was dating Luke Hemmings!” She had a French Canadian accent as she spoke.

“Well, I did tell you his name was Luke,” Jesse said. “I just didn’t tell you his last name.”

“Are you a fan, too?” Daisy asked Roxanne.

“Oh, I’m a huge fan!” Roxanne gushed. “But you’re safe; my favorite member is Ashton.”

“Mine is Luke, and not just because he’s my boyfriend.”

“And mine is Daisy… not just because I’m dating her,” Luke quipped.

Daisy giggled when Luke kissed her neck. “Luke, you’re such a dork!”

“Well, a cute dork, I’d hope.”

“My favorite kind of dork.”

“Daddy!” Connor yelled, running towards Jesse like a bull. “I miss you!”

“I missed you, too, buddy,” he said. “Where are your sisters?”

“They’re napping,” Luke said. “I just put them down.”

“Connor, tell Daddy what’s happening today,” Daisy prompted.

“I’m getting a baby brother!” he squealed, jumping up and down.

Roxanne bent down to meet Connor’s eyes. “Are you excited? What’s your name, by the way? I’m Roxanne, and I’m dating your daddy.”

“I’m Connor,” he flirted. “Watch what I can do!”

“Connor Landon English, don’t you dare!” Daisy scolded when she saw him reaching for the bottom of his shirt.

But Connor didn’t listen. He started to take the shirt off to show Roxanne his abs. Then, Daisy hurriedly pushed it back down over his body, blushing along the way.

“Connor, you’re embarrassing me,” she said.

“So, does he have a tendency to undress himself?” Roxanne asked.

“Only when he meets a female for the first time. He’s really big on girls, and he’s only four.”

Luke laughed. “I still remember the first time he met Savannah, Calum’s gal. He took his entire shirt off, then his pants. Thank God, I stopped him before he could push his undies down.”

“So, let me tell you what the kids’ routines are,” Daisy began. By the time she was finished, it was 10:24, almost time to leave for the hospital. “Any questions?”

“No, I got this,” Roxanne said. “I’m sure Jesse will be more than happy to help me, too.”

“Of course, babe,” Jesse said, putting an arm around her shoulder. “Good luck with the delivery, Dais!”

“Thank you,” Daisy said.

“Connor, be good for your dad and step-mum,” Luke ordered. After Connor responded, Daisy went upstairs to say goodbye to the twins.

“Girls, are you ready to meet your baby brother soon?” Daisy asked usual, Jade was still awake, but Audrey was sleeping like a rock.

“Mama, go-go?” Jade asked sadly. Daisy could see tears welling up in her eyes, so she picked her up to prevent her from waking Audrey up with her cries.

“Yes-yes, Mama, go-go,” Daisy said. “But she’ll be back!”

“Pommis?”

“I promise.” Daisy kissed Jade on the cheek and laid her back down. Then, she kissed Audrey’s cheek, tucked her in, and crept out of the room.

Savannah and Calum got home at 3 pm to see somebody sitting on the doorstep on her phone. Calum groaned at this, as he knew exactly who that somebody was.

“What’s wrong, babe?” Savannah asked as she got out. But Calum pulled her back.

“Wait in the car,” he said. “I have to handle this myself.”

Chapter 7
Calum got out of the car, approached the girl on the doorstep, and cleared his throat.

Georgia looked up and smiled when she saw Calum. “Oh, Calum!” she exclaimed. “You don’t look happy to see me.”

“That would be because I’m not happy to see you,” Calum retorted. “I thought I told you to get out of my life! How the bloody hell did you find this place, anyway?”

“I have my ways. But listen, there’s a reason I’m here.”

Calum guffawed. “And what reason would that be, Miss Priss?”

“I came back for you, Calum. I never should’ve treated you the way I—” She was cut off by Calum’s sudden sneeze. “What was that for?!”

“I’m terribly sorry, but I’m allergic to bullshit. Now, get out and stay out!”

“How is my telling you I’m sorry, bullshit?

“Well, for starters, you dumped that poor baby on me out of the blue. Then, you claimed I raped you when that obviously wasn’t the case!”

“And I’m sorry—”

Calum sneezed again. “No, you’re not! You wanted to sabotage my career by calling me a rapist! What kind of fan are you, anyway?”

Georgia shot up to meet Calum’s angry gaze. “Will you stop sneezing at me and listen?!”

“No. The more bullshit you throw at me, the more often I’m going to do that.” Calum pointed towards Georgia’s car with a cold finger. “Now, get out of my bloody face and never speak to me or MY daughter again!”

“Well, is her name still Chlamydia, at least?”

Calum sneered at his ex as he continued to point. “GO!”

Georgia sneered right back at him but didn’t do anything further. She stormed over to her car without another word, got in, and drove off into the distance.

“Okay, push again,” the delivery nurse, Daphne, coached Daisy later that afternoon. “One, two, three, four…”

Daisy held her knees back and pushed with all the breath in her lungs.

“You’re doing amazing, my love!” Luke praised her, standing at the front of the bed with a towel in his hands to catch the baby. “I can see the head and shoulders – you’re almost there!”

Daisy held her breath for ten more seconds and gave the baby one last heave-ho before he was out of her body. Then, he cried as Luke pulled him the rest of the way out.

“Aw, he’s here!” Dr. Cole fussed, handing Luke the scissors so he could cut the cord. “Congrats! He looks just like you, Luke.”

“Ah, but he has dark hair like Daisy,” Luke said, drying him off and placing him on Daisy’s chest. “Here you go!”

Daisy smiled at her newborn son, whose cries had turned into mere whimpers. “Hi, sweet boy!” she gushed. “What is your name?”

“I think he looks like a Samuel,” Luke said. “We could call him Sammy for short.”

“Well, none of my other kids have nicknames, and I don’t really want him to stick out like that. How about Josiah?”

Luke shrugged. “We could always just ask him. Is your name Samuel, buddy?”

No response.

“Dang it!”

Daisy laughed. “Luke, he’s a baby! But here’s an idea – Josiah Samuel Hemmings. That way, we can compromise.”

“I’m down for that. Do you want to call Jesse while I call the lads?”

“Sure.”

Calum was trying to take Savannah’s mind off Zinnia by serenading her with her favorite 5 Seconds of Summer songs when, in the middle of “Castaway”, Calum’s phone rang. It was Luke, probably calling from the hospital.

“Hey, Luke,” he said. “Did Daisy give birth yet?”

“Yes, she did,” Luke said proudly. “He’s called Josiah Samuel Hemmings, and he’s an absolute spitting image of me.”

Calum smiled at the idea of a mini Luke running around the house. “Aw, how adorable! How was the delivery?”

“Daisy had a hard time pushing the head and shoulders out, but other than that, it went smoothly as silk. I’ll send you a picture when we get off the phone. But both mummy and baby are doing well. What are you doing?”

“Well, that’s good! I’m serenading Savannah to get her mind off our baby. I honestly sang to her our entire debut album, and I’m about halfway through the second, but she’s just not cheering up!”

“Nothing could possibly cheer me up right now, Calum,” Savannah said. “Just stop trying and leave me alone!”

Calum sighed. “Did you hear that? She wants me to leave her alone!”

“Look, Cal Pal… I know you’re frustrated. Zoe’s parents went through the same thing… but I think Savannah has a point. Do you know the saying, ‘time heals all wounds’?”

“What has that got to do with anything, Lucas?! I’m struggling over here!”

“Calum, I’m trying to be the supportive mate here. I’m telling you to just take her advice and let her be. If she wants to spend all day in bed, then let her.”

“Well, okay. I’ll try that; thanks, Luke.”

“Oh, anytime!”

Savannah’s depression continued for the next several days, and by the two-week mark, Calum had had enough. He booked an impromptu flight to Paris to see Harry Styles, managing to find a cheap one that would get them there on the day of the concert. Knowing Harry as a good friend of his, Calum called him to get tickets.

“This is Harry,” Harry answered.

“Hello, Hazza,” Calum greeted him. “It’s Calum from 5SOS. What are you up to?”

“Oh, hello! I’m just relaxing after tour rehearsal. This tour has been absolutely epic so far, and I almost don’t miss having the lads along.”

Calum laughed. “Almost?”

“Well, I’ll always miss 1D, but you know, we’re all busy with solo stuff nowadays. So, what’s up?”

“Hey, listen – I need to ask you a massive favor…”

@A_Vow_of_Silence I need advice, bc I realized they're going to Paris while Zinnia is still in the NICU. idk if that's socially ok or not bc I once saw a traveling NICU mom on Instagram (while her baby was still in the NICU), and she got some backlash for it. Should I make the trip later?

Chapter 8

“Where are we going, exactly?” Savannah asked as Calum led her through the airport.

“Oh, you’ll see when they announce it at the gate,” Calum said. “We’re almost there, too.”

They eventually arrived at the gate just in time for an announcement to come over the loudspeaker.

“Flight 1256 to Paris is now boarding,” the lady said. “Flight 1256 to Paris is now boarding, starting with first class.”

“Did she just say Paris?” Savannah asked.

Calum gave her a smug grin. “Yes, and you’ll see why when we get there.”

Savannah and Calum linked arms as they went through the ticket line and boarded the plane.

“I still don’t know about this, Cal,” Savannah said as they sat down and buckled up. “What if something happens to Zinnia and we don’t find out until we get back?”

“This trip is supposed to take your mind off of everything, love,” Calum soothed, placing a hand on hers. “Besides, that’s what we appointed Daisy and the lads for, to tell us those things.”

“Yeah, that’s true.”

Savannah and Calum arrived at the terminal in Paris almost twelve hours later, when the local time was seven in the morning. They had got plenty of sleep on the plane, so by the time they deplaned, they felt quite rested. As they approached the baggage claim area, Savannah spotted none other than Harry Styles waiting for them. She couldn’t help but let out a classic fangirl scream.

“Babe, you brought me here for Harry Styles?!” Savannah squealed. “Calum!”

“Well, I knew he was one of your favorite musicians, and as you probably remember, the lads and I are good mates with the One Direction boys.”

“Shut the front door! You shouldn’t have!”

Harry stood up from his seat and cleared his throat to get their attention.

“Hello, Calum,” he said. “Who’s the gal?”

“This is my girlfriend Savannah,” Calum said with a grin. “Savannah, Harry Styles.”

Savannah blushed when she looked Harry straight in the eyes. He was staring right back at her with a smile that almost made her feel faint.

“Savannah…” Calum scolded. “We’re a couple.”

“Nah, I’m not trying to steal your girlfriend,” Harry said. “She was just fangirling, is all. Hey, are you sure you’re not engaged yet? You’ve been dating for an awfully long time to not be.”

“We’ve only been dating since last June, nine months ago,” Savannah pointed out.

“So? I know a couple who got engaged after only three months. Calum, you should totally pop the question!”

“Well, I do love her a lot,” Calum said. “I’m actually kind of dreading the thought of leaving her for tour.”

Well, there you go! If you get sad without her, then I’d say it’s time. In fact, I dare you to.”

Calum shook his head. “Sorry, mate… I don’t take dares or challenges.”

“Fair enough. Just think about it.”

Savannah and Calum spent all morning and afternoon exploring Paris and its many sights and tourist attractions. As the day went on, Harry’s words just wouldn’t escape Calum’s mind. Maybe it was time, after all? But was Savannah ready?

Savannah was caught by surprise over dinner at a fancy French restaurant when Calum suddenly asked her about the possibility of marriage.

“Well, that’s a good question,” Savannah asked. “I thought you were going to sleep on it, though?”

“Well, do you like that idea, or should we wait?”

“Babe, we just had a baby. I don’t want it to seem to the media and the fans like you proposed purely because of the baby.” Calum frowned. “I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it at all. I’m just being extra-cautious. I don’t want you getting into another scandal.”

Calum laughed. “It’s not going to turn into a scandal! I really do love you, and I really do think I’m ready. Now, what’s your ring size?”

They finished their meals at six, which left Calum one hour to get Savannah’s ring before the concert started. He covered it up by telling her he needed some toiletries because he’d forgotten his at home, and thankfully, Savannah bought it. Luckily for Calum, there was a jewelry store with a convenience store right next to it, so all he had to do was to make sure he parked out of sight of both stores.

When he entered the jewelry store, the jeweler said something to him in French that he couldn’t understand beyond “bonjour”.

“Uh, hi…” Calum said nervously. “Do you speak English?” Then, he tried to repeat himself in French, but it came out broken. The jeweler laughed at this.

“Yeah, I speak English,” he said. “I just assumed you were one of the locals. How can I help you tonight?”

Calum worked with the jeweler to find just the right ring for Savannah, but this was a quick and easy task; the one he picked was one of the first few rings offered to him. He told the man he didn’t need a bag, pocketed the ring box, and returned to the car.

“That was quick,” Savannah commented. “Didn’t they have anything?”

“They were closed,” he lied. “But it’s okay; I only needed toothpaste, and I’ll just use yours, if it’s alright.”

“Yeah, sure. What are girlfriends for?”

At the concert, the two of them were immediately granted entry to the VIP section when Calum told them he was a friend of Harry’s. When they were settled in their seats, Savannah saw so9mething fall out of Calum’s jacket pocket as he was taking it off. She bent down to pick it up, but Calum stopped her.

“What?” Savannah said. “It’s not like it’s a snake!”

Calum hastily picked it up and returned it to his pocket, but Savannah already sensed that he had something up his sleeve.

“Cal, was that a ring box?” Savannah asked suspiciously.

Calum sighed. He wasn’t planning to propose until Harry came on at nine, but now that he’d accidentally let the cat (ring box) out of the bag – er, pocket – he might as well do it now.

“Okay, it is a jewelry box… but you can’t have it until you answer me this,” Calum said, getting down on bended knee. Then, he opened the box to reveal a beautiful, chunky aquamarine gem set inside a golden ring. Savannah gasped with surprise at this.

“Oh, my God, Calum!” she squealed.

“Savannah Colton, loving you has never been so easy. You’re an incredible mother and stepmother, and I can’t wait any longer to make our relationship official. Will you marry me and become Mrs. Calum Hood?”

“Holy shit, yes!”

Just as their lips touched for the kiss, Savannah heard Harry clearing his throat to get their attention again.

“Harry!” she exclaimed. “How much of that did you see?”

“I saw everything,” he said. “But hey, here on my tour, we love seeing the love shared between a man and a woman. Congratulations!”

“Thank you,” Savannah said.
