At the point syphilis wasn’t super deadly. Some of these soldiers had already experienced the horrors of trench warfare too, and they viewed being in the hospital with an sti as preferable

Oh absolutely, it was painful. And this was before the discovery of penicillin, so the only treatment methods were painful. But hey, it wasn’t the trenches. Just goes to show the extreme conditions in the trenches and the fear they gave soldiers
