CSJH the grace was a girl group that debuted under SM entertainment in 2005. they were made to be the sister group/female counterparts of tvxq, being a heavy vocal focused group and focusing on acapella performances, where every member was main vocalist caliber. Even more interesting is that the CSJH in the group's name is meant to mirror the tvxq names...

for example, lina was "sangmi" meaning "beauty of heaven" which fit her role as the visual of the group. she was also the main vocalist and leader of the group. Lina was also in another sm duo named isak and jiyeon, meant to be the female counterpart to another popular sm duo, fly to the sky. the duo only had one album unfortunately.

secondly, we have stephanie who was named "cheonmu" meaning "dance of heaven" which was a great fit for her as she was the main dancer of the group. she was also known for her amazing ballet skills and contemporary dance skills

thirdly, we have sunday who was named "jisung" meaning "soft voice of heaven" a fitting name for her as she was known for her sweet sounding vocal color, no really if you listen to their songs especially their acapella of elvis presley "can't help falling in love" she could clearly hear her soft and cute sounding voice, yet she sounds so powerful. Predebut, sunday was actually a singer in japan! there's a few of her songs on youtube from her predebut days.

lastly, we have Dana who was named "heeyeol" meaning "happiness of heaven" which fit her role as predebut, dana was actually intended to be the "2nd boa", she has a pre existing solo career and featured a more cheerful image compared to her csjh days.

one interesting fact about the grace is that they made their debut in china first. an interesting venture as i think sm was trying to launch the group into having a HUGE explosive following in china. similar to how was huge in china and arguably even more so with the china line in exo, minus kris, becoming huge household names in their country. they debuted with their song "too good" a simple ballad that showcased the members' vocals, with a pretty and simple MV. i could definitely see csjh becoming an early predecessor for groups like exo to take after. I also think SM designed the group's name to sound regal in china than in korean. their name in chinese is read as: "Tiān Shàng Zhì Xǐ" which sounds very similar to their korean pronunciation if you try to say their chinese name out loud. their japanese pronunciation of their when even sounds similar to TVXQ's. their name is read as "Tenjochiki" while tvxq's is "Tōhōshinki" see the resemblance? you know i've known csjh were the female counterpart to tvxq but when you really look into their names and stuff, the resemblance becomes more apparent. SM really planned out everything with this group to them mirror tvxq, from the members' names, the group name pronunciations, and the actual meaning of their name csjh the grace.

like mentioned earlier, they made their official debut in china first, to push into the chinese market. i think this was a great idea for SM to do, i mean, wasn't the chinese market already booming with chinese acts who were known for vocal heavy songs? or maybe songs like their debut album? it seemed like the perfect venture. they had huge potential, you can blame this entirely on SM, they barely even promoted the group in china, they did get SOME attention or maybe more than that, but i know it wasn't enough attention for SM to capitalize on their rising success in one and also thanks to their mismanagement with the group. this group is a prime example of flip flopping everywhere, they couldn't entirely stay in one place. for some reason, SM had the brilliant idea to send them off to japan whenever they'd release a new korean album and they start to gain some attention and popularity. hell, their fanbase, shapley, was a decent sized fanbase for a relatively new group at the time. the grace was everywhere and SM didn't give the group a chance to build up momentum in either country. a mistake that'll lead to the downfall of the group as right when they were picking up steam with "one more time, ok?" stephanie had a major back injury and had to sit out promotions. for a long time, that was all we've seen of the grace, the group didn't have any comebacks or any group activities, they appeared in a few performers here and there but nothing major.

it seems like a lot of people online blame stephanie for eventually ending the group and i think it's a little too harsh to blame it entirely on a member just because she had to sit out promotions due to a worsening back injury. if anything, she had it an halt to promotions, but she wasn't the main reason why the group eventually went inactive for a long time. they released "one more time ok?" around the same time of snsd's debut song, even though into the new world was a moderate success at first, the song did get more attention than grace's debut song and as the years went by, we eventually saw the debuts of fx, and shinee in the late 2000s, and especially the culture defining hits such as "gee" from snsd and "sorry sorry" from super junior, which permanently cemented both of these groups in the kpop industry. When stephanie sat out for her back injury, i think sm was in a state of panic as the group was known for their differing vocal tones and colors, all of the members needed to be a part of songs to sound amazing together. they were intended to be that way. with a member like stephanie being out, i don't think sm knew how to properly promote the group with a single member missing. it's also because SM did not want to deal with all of these groups finding huge success, so in their eyes, they didn't want to spend time and money on csjh at that point.

Crazily enough, in 2011, sm debuted a sub unit of the grace featuring dana and sunday, the duo didn't really make any major strides besides the grace fans being happy to see the girls again, buuuuuuut...their song wasn't really good 😬 i don't think it's horrible or anything but it's obvious that sm followed the music trends at the time, their debut song is so heavily autotuned and dated by now, it didn't fit the group at all, even more so since the grace had to be a full group to properly have a great song, just having two members in a subunit didn't really work out...but it was an attempt.

Csjh has to be one the biggest losses in kpop history. the group had SO much potential to become legends, if only SM promoted the group properly and focused on one country at a time. it's abundantly clear that SM was trying to do the tvxq strat, with how huge tvxq was in japan, SM probably thought the group would easily see the same amount of success in that country, but not everything works for the same groups. CSJH could've been an asian sensation, they just needed better management and promotions, these groups basically wasted their time at the company for years before eventually leaving and moving on with their lives. i'm glad to see that the group is gaining some fans in recent years, as people seem to genuinely love their music and their voices. it's a shame we lost such a talented group, as in the recent kpop scene, we don't get many groups like csjh, but i know we'll get one soon.
