So if you’re on this thread I assume you fall under one of two categories
1. You’ve heard of/watched Never Have I Ever and are here to mansplain why my opinion is wrong solely based on my thread’s title
2. You don’t know what this show is or who she is and would like a brief overview so you can interact with this thread with some type of understanding of it
For those in category 2, here is said overview
Never Have I Ever is a show about a Tamil-Indian young woman named Devi and what she goes through in high school and life after the death of her father from heart attack the prior year.
Devi is also known in the show to just make frankly very dumb decisions including but not limited to…
-Trying to (secretly) date two of the boys at her school at once
-Accidentally revealing that the new girl at school hasanorexia
-Ditching her friend to go to her “will they won’t they“ potential boyfriend Paxton’s house
-Blatantly lied about sleeping with the most popular guy at school
-Insulted a girl’s dancing while watching a performance at the Ganesh Puja celebration (which led to getting lightly berated by that same girl‘s sister who overheard)
Yeah, this kid does not have the best track record, right? Well I think it’s for a reason when you look at Never Have I Ever more critically
I feel that NHIE has Devi as an unreliable third person narrator rather than a normal MC as many think she is. But you might say “Devi already has a narrator in the series” Yes and no. All of the characters work as third person narrators for themselves in a way (only counting the ones that have had stand-alone episodes). Dev is supposed to represent how your mind functions as a juvenile thinking everything is like a reality show. And McEnroe’s narration rather reflects the less glamorous side of things and is there to remind us that this is the real world, that isn’t a TV program and doesn’t have rewind buttons.
I think the series wouldn’t be the series if Devi wasn’t so, to put it simply, stupid. I can vouch for anyone when I say a drama about high schoolers where everyone’s a well behaved goody two shoes simply doesn’t sound Netflix worthy. And yeah you can have interesting stories without characters who are complete buttheada with a weak moral compass but isn’t it engaging when it is?
