The only "lock-down drill" I've done in schools was watching those old black and white '40's TV PSA videos about what to do in case of nuclear bomb attacks.

You know, the typical "students get under their desks and wait for the destruction to completely subside" videos? Now known as "Just wait to die." WTF??? Good plan, stupid old school board members, good plan! :::: sarcastic thumbs up and smile..... :::

And the typical fire drills, obviously.

What was the procedure if an intruder entered the school for example? Or was that just considered too unlikely to warrant a full on drill?

Oh yeah. I liked them better than tornado and fire drills though I'm not saying that the situation is better. I'm just so blessed to not have it actually happen.

I can't speak for everyone but in the US, Lockdown drills first became prevalent after an incident at Columbine High School in April 1999.

And there was a very tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 that resulted in the death of 20 first graders and 6 educators, including a young boy who sacrificed himself to save more children and teachers. If not for him, many more would've lost their lives that day.

This incident caused almost every school to adapt a lockdown drill.

Before then, there was barely any records of school shootings in the U.S.

We learned about the nuclear bomb attack videos in U.S. History and how it was just in lie the past 2-3 generations you guys watched that. We also concluded that "duck and cover" definitely wouldn't have been enough to protect anyone against a nuclear bomb but that it might've helped with some fear during this time.

I would be scared too if I had to live with the threat of nuclear warfare at any time. And I know that you guys didn't take that lightly.

I didn’t know lockdown drills were exclusively for school shooters initially, especially given that school shooter drills (not lockdowns) also exist. But I suppose it would make sense for that tho be the catalyst.

I dont think ive had any kind of drills in any of my schools ive been in at all. It pretty much was that if something happens we do what teacher tells us to do and thats all we need to know

Interesting! At my school, we just combine it. Basically, if you enter a school without a government ID and a good reason (unless it's like a performance or a game where you don't need to show your ID), you're considered an intruder. Also, it's to protect against anyone, even students, with weapons.

We had a very scary moment 10th grade year where someone yelled that there was a gun on the premises at our homecoming dance and this sent everyone into a panic, so much so that we all rushed out of the building and the parking lot emptied out pretty quickly. Those that couldn't drive were frantically calling their parents and there were a lot of people crying.

Thankfully, the local police set up an investigation but couldn't find any weapon on the school premises, nor the people who originally spread the rumor. If you legitimately thought there was a gun and you said something, that's one thing but making up things that can send people into a frenzy is illegal.

People could've gotten hurt just from evacuating the building so I'm glad that the rule just isn't to run away. It was a little different as this was a Saturday night instead of an in-session school day.

Also, one of the incidents got the people because they pulled the fire alarm and people went out immediately like they would for a fire drill. Now we have to wait a few minutes before we can go outside.

Ah, I see. We just hide and board up as much as possible and the teachers lock their doors. We used to have unblocked windows on every door but now they're all required to have blackout curtains, just in case (and over any windows by the entrance). If we're able to, we could open windows to the outside and run out there. It's safer to just go outside somewhere safe than be trapped inside the school.
