Did you have safety drills at your schools? (1 Viewer)

To practice for emergencies. Stuff like fire drills, tornado drills, etc.

And one I’m curious about is whether you had lockdown drills. For us that meant that we’d go in a sheltered corner of the room, the teacher would turn off the lights, lock doors, put the shades down, etc. Then we’d quietly sit until it’s over. This was supposed to be in case a bad person, potentially with a weapon, was in the school.

I’ve heard about active shooter drills at schools these days, and been like wow. I’m glad we never had anything like that. We just had the normal drills in case someone dangerous is in the school. But only recently did I notice that “dangerous person with a weapon” sounds more similar thematically to active shooter drills than I thought. And that maybe there are places where that’s not something students are practicing a few times a year as a safety drill. So I got curious and decided to see what you guys remember from safety drills at school

We had to do it every September (and fire drills and lockdown). We then did the other two every couple of months.

Just fire drills every year around the time school had just started. It was suppose to be serious but me being in mainly an all boys school we would giggle and just have fun with it. I'd also always go "no way am I leaving my bag behind" lol. Since you are suppose to leave everything behind and just go for the stairs.

And during tornado drills I would always assume that if we actually had a tornado it just fly down the hallway for some reason

We had fire and tornado drills, and for that matter, my workplace still does them occasionally. Never had a "lockdown" or active shooter drill. I don't think my parents ever once thought that was something that could happen to me.

Fire drills. Here in the UK many buildings like that have to do fire drills. That includes most work places.

No other drills. We generally do not worry about violent attacks in schools.

We have mostly fire drills. But when I was in grammar school, we would have this lockdown drill once every year. And during the lockdown drill, they would mention that there is a white van parked in front of the school. Somehow they used this scenario every year for some reason

Just fire drills. I didn't live in a place that got tornadoes and I predate lockdown and active shooter drills.

Same, California was big on earthquake drills for obvious reasons.

Mostly fire drills, we don't have lockdown drills because we normally don't have school shootings. People here don't usually own firearms, and those who do own them for a good reason.

a fire drill yes but nothing more, which is surprising to me to this day because my high school was kinda known for being the only one in the area to have an underground bunker

We had the white van scenario too I remember as a kid we would sing “never trust a man in a big white van”
