When the word entered the English language, apology actually meant a formal justification of one’s actions when faced with an accusation. For example, An Apology for Poetry, written in the late 1500s, did not apologize for poetry existing. Instead, it defended poetry against accusations by certain schools of thought at the time. It certainly never expressed guilt or regret like apology does in the modern day.
