Lenin had 5 siblings, including his older brother Aleksandr Ilyich Ulyanov. Aleksandr was 4 years older than Lenin. He went to university to study and graduated with a degree in zoology. He soon became part of a terrorist group who planned to assassinate Tsar Alexander the 3rd.

On the anniversary of the assassination of previous tsar, Alexander the 2nd, a few members of his group were caught with handmade bombs in St. Petersburg. The police suspected that they were waiting for Alexander the 3rd to make a visit to the grave of his father, and planned to throw bombs into the carriage. This led to the arrests of the conspirators. Initially they were all sentenced to death, but in the end only 5 were executed, which included Aleksandr Ulyanov.

His brothers execution led Lenin to become very politically active. He and his family were unaware of his brothers activism, and were more or less apolitical. But in the wake of his brothers execution, Lenin tried to learn more about what had happened and why, and this search led him towards extremist politics, which he of course became a major player in.

And if you’re wondering why Lenin isn’t part of his brothers name, it’s because Lenin was a pen name. Lenin himself was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov.

Not necessarily. Prior to the Russian Revolution time period I haven’t heard about Russians with pen names. The closest I could think of is Catherine the Great going by her baptismal name (Ekaterina) instead of the name she was given at birth in Germany (Sophia). Also, later Soviet leaders went by their birth names (Krushchev, ect). And then it also depends on what you consider Russian, because some prominent Soviet and Bolshevik figures were not Russian ethnically Russian or not born in modern Russia but they did change their names (borders of Russia in 1914 changed dramatically after the revolution). Some examples are Stalin (ethnically Georgian, changed his name) and Trotsky (ethnically Jewish, born in modern Ukraine, changed his name) while Brezhnev was ethnically Russian but born in modern day Ukraine and did not change his name. So the name change deal was specifically a Bolshevik/early Soviet thing, rather than a Russian specific thing necessarily. Especially for famous Russians from before the revolution
