i don’t think China would accept your application if you don’t prove you’re renouncing your previous citizenships. So you can’t get your their agreement to give you a Chinese citizenship without doing the US paperwork prior to that. China doesn’t have any control over the US citizenship portion anyways, so in this theoretical scenario the person would be a dual citizen and China can’t do anything about it except revoke the Chinese one. No matter what, they can’t take away your US citizenship, and the US would have no obligation to take away your US one because it’s not their law.

It goes beg the question though, what if you renounce your American one to get your Chinese one, and the Chinese one is rejected in the end? Maybe they let you basically say if your new one is successful the US will take yours away but if that one is rejected the US one will stay but I’m not sure.

Just don’t renounce your existing citizenship before your desired citizenship request is granted.

That’s what I figured, but that means that you could theoretically try to game the system by just not renouncing your other one after all. But then again I guess it would be easy enough for China to revoke yours if you try that.

On the other hand, if you live abroad and are a citizen, you pay taxes that you otherwise wouldn't need to pay if you weren't a citizen. So either way your money is going bye bye In the grand scheme of things, you could save more that $2,350, if you have that kind of disposable income to renounce your citizenship.
And ofc if you live abroad and have another citizenship, certain jobs will be unavailable to you. Granted most will be, but not all.
