Since prehistoric times, glitter has been made from many different materials including stones such as malachite, and mica, as well as insects. Modern glitter is usually manufactured from the combination of aluminum and plastic.​

I remember reading about beetles being using for embroidery as well.
o.o Their shells and wings having that iridescent look sewed into garments to look shiny and sparkly.

I never knew that. It does make sense because the iridescent parts of insects, but I wouldnt have guessed this on my own
