Outrage seems like it’s a compound word, combining the words out and rage. But that’s actually not where it comes from. It actually comes from the Old French word outrage, earlier oltrage, which was the combination of outre and the suffix -age. It originally meant excess, but in English turned to a violent outburst over time. It’s likely that the similarity to the English word rage influenced the meaning towards its more violent meaning in the modern day.

It wasn’t a compound word in French, it had a suffix. As an English equivalent, jumping isn’t a compound word, despite coming from jump and the ending ing
