Its just a popular movie and literary myth. Instead, pirates used landmarks, rock formations, islands, and bird migration patterns to navigate. Pirates attacked trade ships carrying goods like spices, cocoa, cotton, and wood. They also attacked ships carrying valuable weapons and tools. Pirates would torture the crew and captains of ships to get them to reveal the location of any hidden treasure.​
