Many scholars trace the origins of fireworks back to the second century B.C., in the ancient Chinese region of Liuyang. According to this view, the earliest “firecrackers” weren’t crafted at all, but discovered—simple bamboo stalks tossed into flames, erupting with sharp cracks as trapped air within their hollow chambers expanded and burst under intense heat. But it was Italy that made fireworks colourful, like we know them today. Modern fireworks spectacles rely heavily on aerial shells—ingenious devices shaped somewhat like inverted ice cream cones. First refined in the 1830s by skilled Italian pyrotechnicians, these shells are carefully engineered: the conical base is packed with propellant, while the rounded “scoop” above is filled with an intricate arrangement of pyrotechnic stars—tiny pellets infused with chemicals that determine the colors we see—and a central bursting charge. When ignited, the result is a dazzling explosion of light and color. It was also the Italians who unlocked the secret of vivid hues, discovering that finely powdered metals could be used to paint the night sky in precise, brilliant shades.
