That the idea of a national identity/nation state is pretty new? In the modern day, many tend to view their nationality as a strong identifier for themselves, and most people have some level of loyalty for their country. But in the past, people didn’t generally view it that way. Their allegiance was to certain people, such as the king, nobles, and others depending on your class. Certain things could influence people to feel more unified (loyalty to a monarch, loyalty to a religion, ect), but that wasn’t due to the idea of nationhood, but more so a shared characteristics

I had an idea about that. The Early Roman Republic was built on the fact that the different territories in Italy were more Italian than Roman and only helped Rome with war. Relatively the same thing with Ancient Greece, a lot of city states.
