In England, there’s a river called Cam that goes through Cambridge. The river is named after the city. Understandable. So what’s the city named after? Well, it turns out the city is named after the river. How could this happen?
The reason this happened is that the river wasn’t always called Cam, nor was the city always called Cambridge. The river used to be named the Granta, and modern day Cambridge, then named Grantebrycge, was named after the river. In modern day parts of the river can still be referred to as the Granta. As for the Cam, it was renamed after the city name shifted from Grantebrycge to Cambridge over time (lots of reasons for that). This was to keep the name of the river similar to the name of the city. Which meant the river was named after the town, and the town after the river
