The Spanish flu of 1918 caused the life expectancy in the U.S. to drop 11-12 years. This was attributable to its quick spread and its tendency to disproportionately affect not just the elderly, but also specifically infants and young adults. That’s a seriously massive drop, the likes of which are only generally seen in famines or genocides.

Dang, the flu is no joke!

Everyone thinks of WW1 for big deadly events in the early 1900s, but almost half of American ww1 deaths alone are thought to be from the flu. Though then again, the flu probably wouldn’t have gotten nearly that big if not for the war so it’s not all one sided.
