for me, I'll usually call them by their stage names, but if their birth name is memorable enough to me, I use that.

I'll use their stage name. I feel that when an idol uses a stage name, they kind of want to separate themselves.
Doyoung openly says "I'm Kim Dongyoung now" when he does relay cams for example and shows his daily life.
So Doyoung made a small change but clearly wants to be separated from him being an idol and him being a normal person.

That's how I feel. If someone says "call me X" then going out of my way to learn their birth name and call them that instead seems, IDK, disrespectful.

It's not kpop, but I know Chappell Roan hates it when fans call her by her birth name. Idols don't necessarily get to be as blunt with their preferences, but I think about that a lot. If they were like "call me [stage name], [birth name], whatever" when doing interviews, then that's one thing, but I can't think of many that have gone out of their way to say that.

UGH, yes, and then they'll go "maybe you aren't a real fan if you didn't know." Apparently, you aren't the real fan, since you're not calling them what they told their fans to call them!!

I usually just follow what the rest of the fandom does. SONEs don't call Seohyun Juhyun, but ARMY calls RM Namjoon

stage names mostly, sometimes by their legal names or other nicknames if they're commonly used within the fandom and if the idol themself doesn't care. carats often call s.coups seungcheol, and the8 minghao (or myeongho for that matter, as it's the korean reading of the chinese characters used to write his name. i find it weird and koreabooish to do that for any chinese idol tbh).

that said, i do like looking up and learning what my faves' legal names are. if they're catholic i also like learning their baptismal names, though i don't call them by that ofc (i'm not catholic myself, but i've noticed many fans call, for example, taemin francesco. additionally, i've also often heard when speaking in english, hangyul refers to himself as michael. another example is karina including katarina on her ig handle. i mean, eh, it's just fun to learn. so, yeah)

Usually stage name, for the reasons listed above. The one exception where I want to get into the habit of not using their stage name is Alex Christine (AleXa) because she expressed not liking her stage name. But it’s not always easy because most people know her as AleXa.
