But when I was in Japan, some of the best restaurants were rated 2 stars

I almost never go to restaurants, but I'd check them. Having said that, especially bigger restaurants might simply buy good reviews.

sometimes but it doesn't determine whether i go there or not, people in my area can be annoying karens who give a restaurant a lower rating because the waiter wasn't smiling enough or some shit like that, and on the other hand the highest rated places are fast food trash like mcdonalds that i will never eat at in my life ever again
