There's a reddit I follow for an author I like, and people will buy the special editions and then "warn" people that if you read your special editions, they will get fingerprints and such on them.

And it's like.... that's the point of a book? To be read? I don't get it. I think things are meant to be used, and if it's something special, then it just makes the experience more special.

I have Pokemon cards that are for my personal collection and not for others to touch and not for trade. They aren’t really worth much but they’re too precious

I don’t think I have any of those. I can get how some people don’t want to use the special things though, since not everything is for use necessarily. You can definitely buy things just for exhibition or collecting or whatnot.

Oh for sure! But, it's weird to me to treat a standard priced book -- even a really nice one! with nice pictures on the inside and whatnot! -- as too special to actually read.

My friend is really into board games, and sometimes the board game community also treats some board games as too special to play, and it's like... what's the point of the board game if all the pieces have to stay in the box and no one can play it?

I do have a friend who bought all 28 versions of T. Swift's new album, which is mildly insane to me, but she at least plays them all. She has a music player in every room of her house and keeps a version handy to it.

- I bought five Blackthorn walking sticks in Ireland over the years. I only use one of them, the other sticks are collector's items.

- My Dreamcatcher 'Broken Halloween' jacket (I even preserve it in a vacuum bag). I hoped to bring it to a fansign and all members could sign it. It wasn't meant to be.

I agree with you, I wouldn’t keep those things untouched either. But everyone views those things in different ways. Like so many people complain about kpop fans buying albums and not using the CDs. And sure most albums have a bunch of inclusions, but some albums don’t, or some people get the same albums with the same inclusions. But I personally wouldn’t buy a book or board game just to not use it personally

I actually have something similar, though I use it in some form. @athenarose made a recipe book as a gift, filled with personalized recipes, scrapbook elements and images, and all hand written. I do use the recipes, but a certified klutz, I prefer taking a photo of the page when actually cooking. Just because if I don’t the pages will go from being beautiful to difficult to read because I accidentally spilled tomato sauce or dropped some of my diced carrots on the page
