Vesna Vulović was a Yugoslav/Serbian flight attendant. On January 26, 1972, she became the person to survive the highest fall without a parachute. On a flight from Denmark to Yugoslavia, a bomb exploded while the plane was flying over Czechoslovakia. Everyone else on the plane died, but after falling 10.16km/6.31 miles(33,333 ft), Vesna landed among the planes wreckage outside the village of Srbská Kamenice, where a previous WW2 medic heard her screams and was able to tend to her until help arrived.
She of course had many injuries, but was alive, and there were a few reasons attributed to her survival. The first was the fact that she ended up trapped by a food trolley in the fuselage, and it’s thought that it helped shield her from impact. The second reason is the snow and terrain cushioning her fall. The third reason was that she had low blood pressure. Doctors think it may have helped in a couple ways, like preventing a heart attack (because she was unconscious), and it may have stopped her heart from rupturing. What’s interesting though is that low blood pressure actually meant that she wasn’t eligible to be a flight attendant. She knew this, and before the medical examination, she cheated the system and drank a lot of coffee to hide the fact that she had low blood pressure. Meaning that the very thing that disqualified her likely allowed her to survive this horrible crash. After a near full recovery, she actually wanted to return to being a flight attendant, but was given a desk job, though she later did fly as a passenger. She later was active in politics, participating in anti government protests and advocating for Serbia to join the EU. In 2016, she died at the age of 66 in Belgrade.
