The answer is……Cyniska of Sparta! She won the Olympic wreath in 396 and 392 BCE, making her the first woman to win an Olympic wreath. The rules meant that women couldn’t participate in the Olympics, but she got the victory due to the different rules in chariot racing. For chariot racing, the wreath wasn’t given to those who rode the chariot, but instead to the person who trained the horses and sponsored them, meaning that while she couldn’t ride in the chariot, she could still get the grand prize. Not all Greek women could do this, in most city states women didn’t have the right to own property or make financial decisions or other rights needed for this. She was not the only woman to win an Olympic wreath in the ancient Olympics, others also did after her time. But it was very very rare.
