Some people assume it’s the chlorine but that’s not the case at all. Chlorine has a very mild smell, and nothing like the pool smell. What gives the pool that smell is a byproduct from a reaction between chlorine and human bodily fluids, including sweat, oils, and especially pee. Another side effect is that when chlorine reacts to these compounds, it lowers the chlorine content of the pool. This means that if a pool smells really strongly, it may be a sign that the water is no longer being disinfected as much as it should.
