I mean, to be fair to my friend, Manson has been dead for 8 years and his crimes are over 50 years old.

I expect that, especially in this era of streaming, it's even easier for people to not have the same shared pop culture knowledge.

I saw a reddit thread the other day that was like "who are celebrities that this reddit acts like are much bigger than they are with the general public" and it reminded me how there are entire shows, movies, songs, etc. that are wildly popular in their niche, but don't necessarily permeate broad pop culture awareness.

There seems to be more interest recently again because of Tarantino. But I guess generally people still know him that are interested in topics like dark history and true crime.

He tried to be, but never really went anywhere. In the recent Netflix documentary, they covered that he met with the Beach Boys at one point, and it's actually part of the reason he was so angry at Hollywood, that he never felt like he got his due recognition.

Which, now that I think about it, turns out being a psycho cult leader got him ingrained in Hollywood lore more than probably anything else he could have done.
