The first bicycles were made in Germany. They were made to be a replacement for horses, due to what was called “the year without a summer” in 1816. In 1815, Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted, and the ash caused global climate changes and large temperature drops. These caused shortages in food and crops, which in turn caused shortages of many animals, particularly ones that didn’t directly give a food source themselves (like horses).
Bonus fact: a Farmers Almanac in the US (targeting New England) gained attention for “predicting” the snowy weather in New England in July. The common story is that it was a misprint that was accidentally right, however that part is hard to prove and likely at least partly exaggeration. But it is known that the forecast they gave did give them attention for seeming unusually accurate, though not known if the attention was immediate or if it was many years later, and the almanac was also much more vague and realistic in its prediction rather than outright predicting snow.
