I've not celebrated my birthday for more years than I can remember and I probably prefer it that way, it's not that I wouldn't like a day that I'm shown some appreciation but I feel like the responsibilities and expectations outweigh the positive.
Anything I want I can easily buy for myself so when I'm given a gift I only feel like I'm given the responsibility to reciprocate and I have a hard time coming up with ideas for a single person not to mention everyone I know. It is also because most people I've known only knew to spend money on things which seems like a burden - and there's no point if we're both doing it only because we have to.
I would have appreciated something from the heart, anything from a backrub to something they made - but I never received something like that and it wouldn't be meaningful if I had to ask. (Of course I mention how I feel about it but I leave the resolution to them)
Beyond gifts I've never liked being the center of attention and I feel uncomfortable making a whole day about myself, I'd rather be appreciated for valuable actions that I take than for simply being born.
I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a part of me who wants someone to see right through me and just celebrate me anyway, because they
want to and I doth protest much because I have no sense of entitlement - which is the biggest reason I want to discourage the expectation. If people know I want it they're going to feel like they have to do that for me and that makes me sick to my stomach.
TLDR; Mommy issues, I want to earn love rather than ask for it.
