The smell associated with fresh cut grass is actually a distress cry. It’s caused by pheromones called GVLs that almost all green plants can produce. They can have a variety of uses, such as warning other plants of danger, attracting bugs as defense, and even protecting against physical dangers like frost.

Yes, though I prefer other scents. The site of the cut grass on top of the other grass shards doesn't sit right with me, though

It’s not thought that it’s a distress cry in the sense that it feels the pain and is in emotional distress, but more so that it provides information to other plants and animals without the actual “distress” aspect. Kind of like if a person broke their leg and feel no pain or emotion, but let others know to ensure their chances of survival are higher. But that said, there’s a lot we still don’t know about other living things so these viewpoints can definitely change with more research.

it does, because we feel pain and distress. Other than that the downsides are mostly just that you would lack mobility and it can cause bad health problems, but grass doesn’t need to be particularly mobile anyway, so as far as we know it’s not a distress call in the same way. It can probably be better compared to how if a doctor taps your knee in the right spot, you end up kicking from reflex. That’s something that happens because of biology, and it results in an action, but it’s not distressing in that same way. It’s not a perfect example ofc because that doesn’t communicate to other plants or animals for survival benefit, but it’s more in line with the lack of a known distressing element to it.
