my favorite time do my reading is at night. the house is quiet, everyone is asleep so i know i won't be interrupted by any noise.
though i do read all throughout the day

When I read a lot it was always at night and right before sunrise.
I used to share a room with my grandparents and would read by the tiny plug in lights.
Contributed to my crappy vision by tenfold

Years ago I read the last released(so far, no. 5 of 7) Game of Thrones book: A Dance of Dragons in hardcover over a whole day or weekend(I musta bought it on Friday night but didn't finish reading it tat evening/night so continued over the the next day/whole weekend.

I don't know if it's changed a lot over the years or just depends on the book but a few years ago when I got really into a series I would binge read as much as I could but more recently i find it hard to sit down so for the last series I read I made it a habit to read one chapter before bed and another just after waking up and that was a really nice routine to have since I like to drag for a while before sleeping/getting up anyway, and I could consistently get 2 chapters in a day.

I think it's especially nice while your mind is still fresh right after waking up, in the day/evening I have a million other thoughts and get distracted easily so I find myself rereading a page while my thoughts stray on things that need doing.

I found the 1st book by chance at a book warehouse sake sometime in 1997/1998 I think. The other book I bought then was the History of The Lord of the Rings: drafts of Fellowship of the Ring(by Tolkien, edited by his son Christoper: 1st of 3+ books in the History of Middle Eath series).

I read n reread the 3 earliest ASoIaF books a few times for the enjoyment/satisfaction I derived from reading those 3. I tried to reread after the 5th book was out but stalled due to work/tiredness/brain too overstuffed from watching tv/movies/Comics n other new-ish books(I wrote a draft tat disappeared mentioning Reacher, Dresden Files, Riftwar, Bones, Dragaera, Vorkosigan, Grisham books ard then/after; except for Bones I stopped midway[Riftwar I read when out originally but stopped after original& Kelewan books] reacher, Dresden, dragaera & vorkosigan I started late when I could borrow from library(physical and/or digitally). If I waited till any of above complete I'd be waiting still. Rowling's Potter grew exponentially by readers not waiting till series was complete. I understand readers not wanting to start an unfinished series but if everyone did tat for Harry Potter or Wheel of Time, Rowling n Robert Jordan might nvr hv grown their readers/sales until they could finish their series.

As for Martin: if he could hv an income whole he wrote Asoiaf as Tolkien taking 20 yrs to write(or at least between hobbit n lotr), he might hv started but who knows where it would hv stopped without readers/sales/feedback. History of middle earth: return of the shadow is fascinating on the drafts of fellowship of the ring; for me at least I had/hv the experience of reading Asoiaf 1-5, dunk n egg 1-3, n other works by Martin. None of it is negatively impacted even if the winds of winter is nvr completed. Mazatlan is touted by others as complete but I nvr finished gardens of the moon(only cos I nvr bought it n had to return my library copy mid reading n no copies available to pick up where I left off). If i tried now I would read it digitally but 10+ books puts me off. Similar for tad Williams dragonbone/sequels. Wheel of time I couldn't get past 1st page so nvr borrowed it.

I hear ya. I just know from past experience that I'd prefer not experiencing a story over never getting an official conclusion, George is more than successful enough now to finish them if he'd like but it seems he has no intention of doing so. I don't really like to re-read/watch things either so it kind of sucks to wait years for a sequel and then barely remember what the story was about.

I really like it when a series is 10+ books, I like to get immersed and live and breathe a setting I'm invested in and if it's over too soon I'm often left wondering what was the point? The longest series I read was 'The Legend of the Ice People' which had 47 books.

No idea how you came to that conclusion... I'm only currently reading a series that's ~5k pages.

Personally, I try to read in the morning and evening. For similar reasons, I know it's not great to start or end the day with doom scrolling and a nice addictive book is a great distraction.
