we have seen a lot of artists do so lately, what do you all think about this?

Yes, I think Independent artist are on rise because anyways and it gives them lot more space in terms of their career. But they need following and connectiond to make it work.

if they know what it will entail and are responsible and prepared for it, why not

if they want to then sure it's good for them

If they can manage themselves well then yeah but if they can't probably best to be managed by someone else as you should play to your strengths and hide your weaknesses
