i mean movie/anime/tv show adaptations for books/manga?

honestly, i don't mind if they change the story a bit but i've rarely seen an adaptation change the story in a good way so i'm always a bit skeptical anyway. i think the only time i recall liking the changed story more than the OG was fullmetal alchemist

Changes are best when they improve on the ideas of the source material and streamline unnecessary fluff. Besides, it’s kind of lame when it adapts the source 1:1. I’d just read the book or whatever it adapted by that point.

i think it’s important to like stay true to the core messages and themes of the source and you can play with everything else as long as it serves the message.

If it's an improvement, or if it's so different that it doesn't feel like the story and just feels like a new thing (like The Hobbit imo). When they change stuff for the worst, especially when they take something with meaning and cut that out not so much (The Lord of the Rings or I Am Legend).
