Do you think "touristy" activities are always bad? (1 Viewer)

I feel like there's people who seem to think "Oh no, tourists go there? Must mean the place is garbage and uncultured and they're all going to buy I ❤ Paris/NYC/Barcelona/whatever t-shirts and keychains and whatever. I'm too superior for that nonsense!". That to me just seems so close minded. No, you won't always learn about all the details about the country you're in if you stick only to the most popular sights, but those sights are often popular for a reason. You could be missing out on some worthy places to visit by discounting anything that has some popularity imo. What do you guys think?

I'm all for people doing whatever the fuck they want, as long as they don't bother me directly.

I was in Paris last weekend and it was indeed packed with tourists to an almost unbearable level, but there's a reason for that - Paris has some of the most emblematic monuments in the world and an atmosphere and architecture that is impossible to replicate (though many cities try to).

Ah that line of thinking feels like a extension of the “ew basic” stuff? Nothing wrong with most tourist stuff. I think certain experiences and places gain lots of notoriety for good reason.

depends? there's a specific type of tourist trap attractions that I side eye (mme tussauds, ripley's believe it or not, or other such "novelty" type attractions) a bit but places are usually popular for a reason, and not everyone likes planning and researching as thoroughly
I, for example, avoid the big "classic" museums because I've honestly been to enough of the tomb raider deposits (the us, uk, france, germany) to the point where their collections start bleeding together, but I understand that that isn't the case for everyone
